IQOS ILUMA vs ILUMA i: Should You Upgrade?

0 shares X
IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA i devices compared side by side

Both devices heat the same TEREA sticks with the same Smartcore induction system, so the tobacco experience itself is unchanged. What ILUMA i adds is control over the session: a touch screen instead of LED dots, Pause Mode to stop and resume a session within 8 minutes, FlexPuff which can add up to 4 puffs on top of the standard 14, and FlexBattery to switch between more consecutive uses or longer battery lifespan. If your ILUMA works and you never get interrupted mid-session, there’s no performance reason to upgrade. If you regularly abandon half-used sticks because the phone rings, Pause Mode alone can justify it.

What stays the same

Nothing about how the tobacco is heated has changed:

  • Same Smartcore Induction System, heating the metal element sealed inside the stick
  • Same bladeless design, so no cleaning of the holder
  • Same TEREA sticks, all editions, no regional or generational lock
  • Same holder plus pocket charger format
  • Same session length of roughly 6 minutes or 14 puffs

If you’re switching from a blade device rather than from ILUMA, the more useful read is how TEREA sticks work, which explains the induction system that both generations share.

What ILUMA i adds

Touch screen

ILUMA replaced the older LED dot indicators with a small touch-sensitive screen. It shows preheating status, time left in the session, and how many uses the battery has left. Pause Mode is operated through it: swipe down the full length of the screen to pause, swipe up to resume.

Pause Mode

You can pause a session for up to 8 minutes and pick it up where you left off, instead of losing the stick.

There are real conditions attached, and most sellers don’t mention them:

  • Only works in Performance Mode, which is the default
  • Only within the first 3 minutes or first 8 puffs of the session
  • Available once, on one of your two consecutive uses
  • If you don’t resume within 8 minutes, the holder switches off and the session ends
  • FlexPuff does not activate on a session where you used Pause

FlexPuff

At the end of a session, the device checks whether the stick was fully consumed. If it wasn’t, it can add up to 4 extra puffs on top of the standard 14. It runs automatically with nothing to enable, and how often it triggers depends on how you puff.

FlexBattery

This lets you choose what the holder battery prioritises, set through the IQOS app:

  • Performance Mode (default): 2 consecutive uses of up to 6 minutes, one of which can be paused. Without using Pause, you get up to 3 consecutive uses.
  • Eco Mode: a single 6-minute use per charge, no Pause, in exchange for extending the holder battery lifespan by up to a year.

Eco Mode suits light users who go one stick at a time. Performance Mode suits anyone who smokes back to back or shares with a partner.

Which model has which feature

This is where most buyers get caught out. The ILUMA i range is not uniform.

The short version: if Pause Mode is the reason you’re upgrading, the ILUMA i One is not the model to buy. It’s the compact all-in-one, and it carries FlexPuff but not Pause or FlexBattery.

Compare the full lineups on the IQOS ILUMA range and the IQOS ILUMA i range. If you’re choosing within one generation rather than between them, the ILUMA One vs Standard vs Prime comparison covers that.

Does ILUMA i change the taste?

No. Heating temperature, session length and the stick itself are unchanged, so the same TEREA flavor tastes the same in both generations.

The only indirect effect is FlexPuff. If your stick wasn’t fully consumed and the device adds puffs, you get slightly more out of it. That’s a quantity difference, not a flavour one.

So should you upgrade?

Upgrade if:

  • You get interrupted often and waste part-used sticks. Pause Mode is the one feature that changes daily use.
  • You want to see session and battery status at a glance instead of counting LEDs.
  • Your current ILUMA holder battery is fading anyway, so you’d be replacing it soon regardless.

Don’t upgrade if:

  • Your ILUMA is working fine and you use it in uninterrupted sessions.
  • You were expecting better flavour or stronger vapour. That comes from the stick, not the device.
  • You’re mainly after the compact form. ILUMA One already does that, and ILUMA i One drops the two features worth upgrading for.

If you’re buying your first device, go straight to ILUMA i Standard or i Prime. The price gap over standard ILUMA is small relative to how long you’ll keep the device, and you get the features from day one.

Not ready for either? Compatible Lambda devices run the same TEREA sticks at a lower entry price, though without any of the i-series features. The Lambda vs IQOS ILUMA comparison goes through that trade-off.

Sticks work across both generations

Whatever you buy, your existing sticks carry over. There is no generational restriction on TEREA. Every edition we stock, including Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Japan, UAE and Armenia, works in ILUMA and ILUMA i alike.

What doesn’t work is the other direction: neither generation accepts HEETS, and TEREA won’t heat in blade devices like the IQOS 3 Duo. The TEREA compatibility guide has the full device list.

Buying in Abu Dhabi

We stock both generations for delivery across Abu Dhabi and the UAE, with cash on delivery. Browse the ILUMA i devices or the standard ILUMA devices, and pair either with TEREA sticks in the same order.

FAQ

Can I use my old TEREA sticks in ILUMA i?

Yes, all of them. TEREA has no generational lock, so any edition works in either device.

Does ILUMA i One have Pause Mode?

No. FlexPuff works on every ILUMA i model, but Pause Mode and FlexBattery are limited to ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime. If Pause is what you want, the i One is the wrong model.

Is Pause Mode always available?

No. It works in Performance Mode only, within the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs, and once per pair of consecutive uses. Miss that window and you finish the session normally.

Does FlexPuff always give me 4 extra puffs?

Not always. The device checks whether the stick was fully used, and how often it triggers depends on your puffing pattern. It also stays off for any session where you used Pause Mode.

Is standard ILUMA worse now?

No. It heats identically and takes the same sticks. The i-series adds session control features, not better heating.

Do I need the IQOS app?

Only for FlexBattery. Switching between Performance and Eco Mode is done in the app. Pause Mode and FlexPuff work on the device itself.
