Everything here exists for one reason: blade devices collect tobacco residue, and residue costs you flavour.

If you own an IQOS ORIGINALS DUO, an ORIGINALS ONE, a lil SOLID, or a blade-based Lambda, this page is for you.

If you own an ILUMA or ILUMA i, you don’t need any of it. Philip Morris states plainly that no cleaning is required for IQOS ILUMA devices, because induction heating means nothing inside ever touches tobacco. We’d rather tell you that than sell you something you have no use for.

Why blade devices need cleaning

The ceramic blade slides into the tobacco stick and stays there for the whole session. Even though nothing burns, tobacco residue accumulates inside the heating chamber, and Philip Morris is direct about the consequence: it keeps you from enjoying the true tobacco taste.

The official recommendation is to clean after every pack of 20 sticks. Not after every session, and not when flavour has already dropped off.

There’s a simple way to check whether you’ve done a good job. The area around the blade should look grey or white, with no particles and no dark coating. If it looks dark, it needs more work.

What each product does

IQOS Cleaning Tool is the core of the routine. It has two heads: a rotating head for the heating chamber, and a sweeping head for the cap and around the base of the blade.

Cleaning sticks are the finishing step, used after the tool to lift what the brush leaves behind and to clean the inside of the cap. They come in packs of 30, individually wrapped. A lemon-scented version is also available.

Elio electronic cleaning tools automate the brushing. A motorised head does the rotation for you, which suits anyone who cleans often or finds the manual routine fiddly. Available in black, red and white.

Liquid cleaner is a third-party product for deeper cleaning, with an important caveat we cover on its page.

Oil absorbing sheets handle the exterior rather than the chamber, lifting oils and fingerprints from the body and cap.

The routine, step by step

Philip Morris publishes this for IQOS ORIGINALS devices, and the same principles apply to any ceramic blade device.

Cool it. Wait at least 30 seconds after your last stick so the blade is cool. Avoid pressing the button during cleaning, so the device doesn’t start heating.

Tap it. Remove the cap, turn the holder upside down and tap gently to release loose tobacco.

Rotate. Take the cap off the cleaning tool, check the head isn’t bent or dirty, and insert the rotating head straight into the chamber without twisting until it touches the bottom. Twist gently two or three times, then pull it straight out. Tap both the holder and the tool.

Sweep. Line up the sweeping head with the chamber, insert it smoothly without twisting, and move it side to side to clear residue around the base of the blade.

Finish with a stick. Insert a cleaning stick straight into the chamber and clean the bottom with a semicircular motion.

Do the cap. Work a cleaning stick down the inside of the cap from the top, then use the sweeping head on the bottom of the cap with two or three gentle twists.

Our full guide to cleaning an IQOS device walks through it with more detail.

What not to do

These come straight from Philip Morris and they’re worth taking seriously, because most device damage from cleaning comes from ignoring them.

Never use water. Not on the holder, not on the cap, not on the cleaning tool. Moisture reaching the electronics is a common cause of failure.

Never use cleaning agents, solvents, chemicals, volatiles or compressed air on the holder, cap or cleaning tool.

Don’t try to clean the blade itself. Clean only the bottom of the heating chamber. Don’t push or knock a cleaning stick against the blade.

Don’t use a toothpick or a cotton bud. They fray, leave fibres behind, and can damage the device. This is the most common improvised mistake.

Don’t force a blocked cleaning stick. Use the cleaning tool to unblock it instead.

The lil SOLID exception

lil SOLID uses a steel heating pin rather than a ceramic blade, and it needs a different habit.

Where an IQOS blade device wants sticks pulled straight out, lil SOLID wants the stick rotated more than three times in one direction before removal. That rotation is what keeps residue out of the chamber in the first place, and it does more for cleanliness than any tool afterwards. Full details on the lil SOLID page.

Or skip cleaning entirely

Worth saying on a page selling cleaning products: induction devices never need any of this.

The IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i ranges heat a metal element sealed inside the stick, so tobacco never contacts the device. Used sticks come out whole and nothing accumulates. The same applies to Lambda induction models.

If daily cleaning is what’s wearing you down about your current device, that’s the fix rather than a better brush. How TEREA sticks work explains the mechanism, and what the HEETS phase-down means for UAE users covers whether switching makes sense for you.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my device?

After every pack of 20 sticks, per Philip Morris guidance. Cleaning after every session isn’t necessary, and waiting until flavour drops off means you’ve already lost quality.

Do ILUMA devices need cleaning?

No. Philip Morris states that no cleaning is required for ILUMA devices. Induction heating means nothing inside ever touches tobacco.

Can I use water or alcohol to clean it?

Never water, and no cleaning agents, solvents or chemicals on the holder, cap or cleaning tool. Cleaning sticks are the intended product for anything the brush leaves behind.

Can I use a cotton bud instead of a cleaning tool?

Philip Morris advises against it. Cotton buds and toothpicks fray and can leave material inside or damage the device.

How do I know when it’s clean enough?

The area around the blade should look grey or white with no dark coating and no visible particles.

Should I clean the blade itself?

No. Clean only the bottom of the heating chamber, and don’t push or knock anything against the blade.
