ILUMA i Prime is the flagship of the current IQOS generation: the full ILUMA i feature set built in premium materials, with a wrapped pocket charger, a sliding door and a replaceable cover that lets you change the finish later.

Feature for feature it matches ILUMA i. Touch screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, FlexBattery, autostart, up to three consecutive uses. What you’re paying for is the object rather than the performance, and we’d rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.

What makes it the Prime

Three things separate it from the standard ILUMA i, and none of them touch the heating.

The body is built in premium materials with a leather-effect wrap around the pocket charger, held on by linear magnets. The wrap pulls off from the top down, which means the finish isn’t permanent: a Garnet Red device can become something else later. No other ILUMA device offers that.

The charger uses a sliding door rather than a lid, so the holder is revealed as you open it instead of lifted out of a well.

And the whole thing is heavier and more substantial in the hand, which is either the point or a drawback depending on what you want from a pocket device.

The features it shares with ILUMA i

Touch screen. The holder displays preheating progress, time remaining in the session, and how many uses are left before charging. The counter shows a number, then a dash after the second session, then zero when the holder is empty.

Pause Mode. Scroll down the screen to pause and resume within 8 minutes, or the holder switches off and the session ends. It works only in Performance Mode and only during the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs. Using it costs you a consecutive session: with pause active you get two rather than three.

FlexPuff. The device reads your puff pattern over the first three minutes or eight puffs and may extend a session by up to four extra puffs, taking a stick from 14 to as many as 18. It activates on individual usage rather than universally, and it doesn’t run on a paused session. Pause and FlexPuff are effectively an either-or within one stick.

FlexBattery. Set through the IQOS app. Performance Mode is the default: three consecutive sessions of up to six minutes without pause, or two with pause available on one of them. Eco Mode restricts you to one session at a time and extends the holder’s battery lifespan by up to a year, assuming you use Eco throughout the holder’s life. Pause Mode requires Performance Mode, so switching to Eco disables it.

Prime and ILUMA Prime parts work together

Useful if you already own the previous generation or plan to upgrade in stages: an ILUMA i Prime holder charges in an ILUMA Prime pocket charger, and an ILUMA Prime holder charges in an ILUMA i Prime charger.

That cross-compatibility applies to the Prime line specifically, and it makes keeping a spare charger at work or in a car more practical than it would otherwise be.

Where it sits in the range

Five devices, one heating system. Nothing here heats better than anything else.

ILUMA i One is the all-in-one in this generation, with autostart and FlexPuff but no touch screen, no Pause Mode and no consecutive uses. The cheapest way in.

ILUMA i has the complete feature set in a plastic two-piece body, and costs less than Prime.

ILUMA i Prime is that same feature set in premium materials with the replaceable wrap.

The older ILUMA range heats identically without the screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff or FlexBattery, and with two consecutive uses instead of three. The four finishes

Identical devices, different covers.

Midnight Black is the neutral that hides marks best. Breeze Blue is the cool option and generally the best seller. Aspen Green is the muted, natural-toned one. Garnet Red is the deep, rich finish and the boldest of the four.

Since the wrap comes off, none of these is a permanent commitment.

Setting it up

Charge the pocket charger fully before first use, about 2 hours 15 minutes over USB-C, then hold the charger button for four seconds to turn the device on.

Slide the door open, take the holder out, and insert a TEREA stick to the line on the filter. Heating begins automatically and the touch screen shows preheating progress. When it completes, draw normally for up to six minutes or 14 puffs plus any FlexPuff extension, with the screen showing time remaining. Remove the used stick and return the holder to the charger.

To pause, scroll down the touch screen; two short vertical LEDs at the top confirm Pause Mode is active. FlexBattery modes are changed in the IQOS app. If the holder ever needs resetting, place it in the charger and hold the charger button for 10 seconds.

Why there’s nothing to clean

Older IQOS devices heated the stick with a ceramic blade that collected tobacco residue and needed regular cleaning with sticks and cotton buds.

There’s no blade in any ILUMA device. Smartcore induction heats a metal element sealed inside each TEREA stick through a magnetic field, so nothing inside the holder touches tobacco. Sticks come out whole, nothing accumulates, and the only surface that needs attention is the wrap, which wipes clean with a damp cloth. How TEREA sticks work explains the mechanism.

The same design means it takes TEREA and nothing else. HEETS contain no metal element for induction to heat, and TEREA won’t heat in an IQOS 3 Duo. Sticks to buy with it

We stock all 75 TEREA flavors across five editions. For a first device, Amber suits full-flavor cigarette smokers, Yellow suits light smokers, and Turquoise suits menthol smokers.

Edition affects price more than taste. Most customers buy the Kazakhstan range, on cost and for its five Pearl capsule flavors. Armenia is cheaper with a shorter lineup, Japan and Indonesia carry exclusives, and the official UAE edition comes in Arabic and English packaging at RRP. Care in the UAE

The operating range is 0 to 40°C, which a parked car here exceeds easily in summer. Heat also shortens lithium battery life generally, so keep both parts out of direct sun.

Use the supplied cable and adapter, avoid running the holder while the charger is plugged in, and wipe the wrap with a damp cloth when it needs it. Note that wraps aren’t covered by the device warranty. If you want maximum battery lifespan, Eco Mode in the IQOS app is the setting that extends it.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime?

Materials and design, not features or performance. Both have the touch screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery, both manage up to three consecutive uses, and both heat identically. Prime is built in premium materials with a replaceable wrap and a sliding door.

Can I change the colour later?

Yes. The wrap is held on by linear magnets and pulls off from the top down, so the finish isn’t permanent. Wraps aren’t covered by the device warranty.

How many sticks back to back?

Up to three in Performance Mode without using pause, or two with pause. Eco Mode gives one at a time. The charger holds around 20 sticks in total.

Does Pause Mode work in Eco Mode?

No. Pause requires Performance Mode, so switching to Eco in the IQOS app disables it.

Are ILUMA Prime and ILUMA i Prime compatible?

Yes. An ILUMA i Prime holder charges in an ILUMA Prime pocket charger and the other way round, which is useful if you own both or upgrade gradually.

How long does charging take?

About 2 hours 15 minutes for the pocket charger over USB-C.

Does it need cleaning?

No. There’s no blade, so no residue collects inside. Only the wrap needs an occasional wipe.

Can it use HEETS?

No. HEETS have no metal heating element, so induction has nothing to heat. TEREA sticks only.
