IQOS ILUMA i

ILUMA i is the two-piece device in the current IQOS generation, and the model where the generation’s features actually live. A touch screen on the holder, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery, plus up to three consecutive sessions from a charged holder.

It also accepts more than TEREA. ILUMA i works with the full SMARTCORE STICKS family, which includes TEREA, LEVIA and DELIA, so the device isn’t locked to a single stick line the way older hardware effectively was.

The touch screen and what it reports

The holder carries a small display, and it answers the question older devices left you guessing at: how many sessions are left before you need the charger.

It shows preheating progress while a stick warms, time remaining during the session, and a count of available uses that drops to a dash after the second session and to zero when the holder is empty. Pause Mode is activated by scrolling down that screen, confirmed by two short vertical LEDs at the top.

Pause Mode, and its conditions

You can stop a session and resume within 8 minutes. Leave it longer and the holder switches off, ending the session.

Three conditions apply, and they’re rarely stated together. Pause works only in Performance Mode. It works only during the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs. And using it costs a consecutive session, so you get two back-to-back rather than three.

FlexBattery: Performance or Eco

Set through the IQOS app rather than on the device itself.

Performance Mode is the default: three consecutive sessions of up to six minutes without pause, or two with pause available on one of them.

Eco Mode limits you to one session at a time and extends the holder’s battery lifespan by up to a year, assuming Eco is used throughout the holder’s life. Because Pause requires Performance Mode, switching to Eco disables pausing entirely.

Performance suits people who use several sticks in a sitting. Eco suits lighter users who’d rather the holder lasted longer.

FlexPuff

During the first three minutes or eight puffs the device reads your puff pattern and may extend the session by up to four extra puffs, taking a stick from 14 to as many as 18.

Philip Morris is explicit that activation depends on individual usage patterns, so it won’t apply to every user or every session. It’s also designed for tobacco sticks specifically, and it does not activate when pause is used. Within a single stick, Pause and FlexPuff are an either-or.

A compatibility warning worth taking seriously

Philip Morris states this plainly and so will we: do not use ILUMA devices or SMARTCORE STICKS with previous IQOS generations, as it can damage the device.

That runs both ways. HEETS have no metal element, so induction has nothing to heat, and a TEREA stick forced into a blade device like the IQOS 3 Duo risks damaging the blade. There’s a separate safety note on the sticks themselves: SMARTCORE STICKS contain a sharp metal part and must not be swallowed or disassembled. Keep them away from children.

How it sits against the rest of the range

ILUMA i One is the all-in-one in this generation. It has autostart and FlexPuff, but no touch screen, no Pause Mode, no FlexBattery and no consecutive uses. Cheapest way in.

The five colours

Midnight Black is the neutral that hides marks best. Breeze Blue is the signature colour of the i series and the usual best seller. Vivid Terracotta is the warm earth tone and the most unusual finish in consumer electronics. Leaf Green is the understated colour option. Digital Violet is the boldest of the five.

Some markets have also seen an Electric Purple limited edition, which isn’t part of the standard palette.

Setting it up

Charge the pocket charger fully first, about 2 hours 15 minutes over USB-C, then hold the charger button for four seconds to switch the device on.

Take the holder out, insert a stick to the line on the filter, and heating begins automatically with the screen showing preheating progress. Draw normally once it completes, for up to six minutes or 14 puffs plus any FlexPuff extension. Return the holder to the charger afterwards.

No cleaning, at all

The SMARTCORE Induction System heats a metal element sealed inside each stick using a magnetic field. Nothing in the holder touches tobacco, so no residue collects and there’s no cleaning routine of any kind. Sticks to buy with it

We stock all 75 TEREA flavours across five editions. Amber suits full-flavour cigarette smokers, Yellow suits light smokers, Turquoise suits menthol smokers.

Care in the UAE

The stated operating range is 0 to 40°C, which a parked car here exceeds easily in summer. Beyond that limit, heat shortens lithium battery life generally, so keep both parts out of direct sun.

Use the supplied cable and adapter, avoid running the holder while the charger is plugged in, and switch to Eco Mode in the IQOS app if maximum holder lifespan matters more to you than back-to-back sessions.

What’s the difference between ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime?

Does it only work with TEREA?

No. ILUMA i accepts the whole SMARTCORE STICKS family, which includes TEREA, LEVIA and DELIA. What it will never accept is HEETS, which contain no metal element for induction to heat.

How many sticks back to back?

Three in Performance Mode without pause, two with pause, one at a time in Eco Mode. The charger holds around 20 sticks in total.

Why doesn’t FlexPuff activate for me?

It depends on individual puff patterns, so it doesn’t apply to everyone. It also never activates on a paused session, and it’s designed around tobacco sticks specifically.

Can I use ILUMA i sticks in my old IQOS 3 Duo?

No, and Philip Morris warns against trying. SMARTCORE STICKS are not designed for previous generations and using them that way can damage the device.
