How Do TEREA Sticks Work? Smartcore Induction Technology Explained

0 shares X
Cutaway view of a TEREA stick showing the Smartcore metal heating element inside the tobacco

Every TEREA stick has a small stainless steel heating element sealed inside the tobacco. PMI calls it Smartcore. When you insert the stick into an IQOS ILUMA, the device creates a magnetic field that heats this element from the inside, and the warmed tobacco releases a nicotine-containing aerosol instead of smoke. There is no flame and no ash, and because the heating happens through induction, TEREA only works with induction devices like the IQOS ILUMA series. It will not work in blade devices like the IQOS 3 Duo.

What is Smartcore?

Smartcore is the metal heating element inside every TEREA stick. You can’t see it because it sits sealed within the tobacco plug, but it’s the reason the whole system works.

Older heated tobacco worked the other way around. The heat source (a ceramic blade) lived in the device, and you pushed the tobacco stick onto it. TEREA flips this: the heat source lives inside the stick, and the device only supplies energy to it. One stick, one heating element, one session. When the stick is finished, the element goes with it into the bin.

How induction heating works (the simple version)

Think of an induction cooktop in a kitchen. The cooktop itself never gets hot. It creates a magnetic field, and the metal pan sitting on it is what heats up.

The IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i devices do the same thing at pocket size. You insert a TEREA stick, the device generates a magnetic field around it, the Smartcore element responds to that field and heats up, and the heat spreads from the center of the tobacco outward. The warmed tobacco then releases its flavor and nicotine as an aerosol. At no point does anything burn.

Why “bladeless” matters

The blade in older IQOS devices caused the most common complaints owners had:

Problem with blade devicesWhat induction changes
Blade could snap if you twisted the stickNo blade, so nothing to break
Tobacco residue built up inside and needed regular cleaningTobacco stays sealed inside the stick, so the device stays clean
Heat came from one side, so taste could be unevenHeat spreads from the center, so flavor stays consistent from first puff to last

This is also why a used TEREA stick comes out intact: the tobacco never touches the inside of your device. If you’ve owned an IQOS 3 Duo and remember scraping residue out with the little cleaning tool, that chore is gone with ILUMA. (Blade device owners can still make life easier with our IQOS cleaning guide.)

Aerosol, not smoke. What’s the difference?

Smoke is what you get when something burns. Burning tobacco produces smoke, ash, and a smell that clings to clothes and rooms.

TEREA heats tobacco without burning it, so the output is an aerosol, a vapor that carries the tobacco flavor and nicotine. In practice this means no ash at any point, no lit end, and noticeably less lingering smell than a cigarette. The stick looks nearly the same after use as before. We’ve broken down the smell question in more detail in do TEREA sticks smell.

One thing worth being honest about: TEREA is still a tobacco product and still contains nicotine, which is addictive. “No smoke” means no combustion. It does not mean risk free.

Which devices can actually heat a TEREA stick?

Because the heat comes from induction, TEREA only works in devices built with an induction coil.

Works with TEREA:

  • IQOS ILUMA One, ILUMA Standard and ILUMA Prime. See the full IQOS ILUMA device range.
  • IQOS ILUMA i One, ILUMA i Standard and ILUMA i Prime, the newer ILUMA i series.
  • Compatible third party induction devices like the Lambda i8, i9 and i10.

Does not work with TEREA:

  • IQOS 3 Duo, IQOS Originals Duo, IQOS Originals One and lil Solid. These are blade-based IQOS devices with no induction coil. A TEREA stick inserted into one of them simply won’t heat, and forcing it can damage the stick.

The reverse is also true. HEETS sticks have no metal element inside, so an ILUMA has nothing to heat, which means HEETS won’t work in ILUMA either. For the full device-by-device breakdown, see the TEREA device compatibility guide.

How long does one stick last?

A TEREA session runs around 6 minutes or up to 14 puffs, whichever comes first, which is similar timing to a cigarette. Each pack contains 20 sticks, and a standard carton holds 10 packs (200 sticks). For nicotine content and full specs, see how many puffs in a TEREA stick.

A note on disposal

Because there’s a metal element inside, used TEREA sticks shouldn’t go into organic or compost waste. Regular general waste is fine. Don’t try to open a used stick to remove the element.

FAQ

Can I use a TEREA stick twice?

No. The tobacco and the Smartcore element are designed for one session. A used stick won’t produce proper flavor or vapor a second time.

Why does my TEREA stick not heat up?

The two most common reasons: you’re using a blade device (TEREA needs induction, check the compatible list above), or the battery is too low for a full session. If it happens in a compatible, charged device, the stick itself may be damaged.

Does the metal element affect the taste?

No. It’s a heating element, not a flavor component. Taste comes from the tobacco blend, which is why flavors differ so much between editions like Kazakhstan and Japan.

Is TEREA the same as vaping?

No. Vapes heat flavored liquid. TEREA heats real tobacco. Both avoid combustion, but they’re different product categories.
