Can You Use HEETS in ILUMA? (And TEREA in IQOS 3 Duo?)
No to both, and the reason is the same in each direction: the heat has to come from somewhere, and these two systems put it in different places. HEETS sticks are hollow tobacco designed to be heated by a ceramic blade inside the device. TEREA sticks carry their own metal heating element sealed inside, and ILUMA devices have no blade at all, only an induction coil. Put a HEETS in an ILUMA and nothing heats it. Put a TEREA in a 3 Duo and the blade has to force its way into a stick that was never built to receive it. There is no adapter, no setting, and no workaround that changes this.
Why HEETS won’t work in an ILUMA
Open up the logic and it’s simple. A HEETS stick contains only tobacco. It has no heating component of its own, because it was designed to sit on a blade that supplies all the heat.
An ILUMA has no blade. Its induction coil creates a magnetic field, and that field only heats metal placed inside it. A HEETS stick has no metal, so the field passes through it and nothing happens.
What you’ll actually see: the stick slides in, the device may start its heating cycle normally, and when you draw on it you get almost nothing. No proper aerosol, no flavor, just warm air at best. The device isn’t broken. It’s working exactly as designed on a stick that gives it nothing to work with.
Why TEREA won’t work in an IQOS 3 Duo
This direction is the riskier one.
A TEREA stick is sealed at the base and has the Smartcore metal element running through the tobacco. A blade device expects to slide its ceramic blade into a hollow stick. When you push a TEREA onto that blade, the blade meets a sealed base and a metal element instead of soft tobacco.
Two things can go wrong. The blade in IQOS 3 Duo and Originals devices is thin ceramic and is the single most fragile part of the device, so forcing it against resistance is how blades chip and snap. And even if it goes in, the heating is wrong. Blade heat applied to a stick engineered for internal induction heating gives you a burnt, unpleasant taste rather than the flavor the blend was built for.
Same answer for lil Solid, which is also a blade device. If your device came from the older blade-based IQOS range, TEREA is not an option for it.
Telling the sticks apart
If you own both, the packs and sticks are easy to distinguish once you know what to look for:
| HEETS | TEREA | |
|---|---|---|
| Stick base | Open, hollow tobacco you can see | Sealed, with a solid cap |
| Inside | Tobacco only | Tobacco plus the Smartcore metal element |
| Designed for | Blade devices: IQOS 3 Duo, Originals Duo, Originals One, lil Solid | Induction devices: ILUMA, ILUMA i, compatible Lambda models |
| After use | Tobacco residue left in the device | Stick comes out intact, device stays clean |
The sealed base is the fastest check. If you can see into the end of the stick, it’s a HEETS.
Is there an adapter?
No. This gets asked a lot, and the answer isn’t “not yet” or “only online”. It’s no.
An adapter would have to add a metal heating element to a HEETS stick, or remove one from a TEREA stick and replace it with a hollow channel. That isn’t an accessory, that’s rebuilding the consumable. Anything sold as an ILUMA-to-HEETS adapter is not doing what it claims.
You upgraded to ILUMA and have HEETS left over
Common situation, and there’s no clever fix. Those HEETS only work in a blade device.
Your options: keep your old IQOS to finish the packs, pass them to someone still using a blade device, or accept the loss on what’s left. Don’t force them into the ILUMA hoping for a partial result, because you’ll only waste sticks.
If you’re keeping the old device alongside the new one, it will still need regular cleaning since blade devices collect residue. Our IQOS cleaning guide covers that. The ILUMA won’t need it.
You have a 3 Duo and want to try TEREA
You need an induction device. There are two routes.
The official route is an IQOS ILUMA. The ILUMA range covers ILUMA One as the compact single-piece model, ILUMA Standard with a separate holder and charger, and ILUMA Prime as the premium version. The newer ILUMA i series adds a display and extra features on top of the same heating system.
The budget route is a compatible third-party device. Lambda devices use the same induction principle and accept TEREA sticks at a lower price than official hardware. The Lambda i8 review covers what you gain and give up going that way.
Either route, the sticks then come from the same place: the full TEREA range, where the Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Japan, UAE and Armenia editions each carry their own flavor lineup.
Does ILUMA actually taste different?
Yes, and it’s the part people notice before the convenience. Blade heating warms a stick from one side outward, so the first puffs and last puffs of a HEETS often aren’t identical. Induction heats from the center, so a TEREA session holds a steadier flavor from start to finish.
The other change is the device staying clean. No tobacco touches the inside of an ILUMA, so there’s no residue and no gradual taste build-up from a device that needs cleaning. If you want the technical side of that, we’ve explained it in how TEREA sticks work.

FAQ
Will inserting a HEETS into my ILUMA damage it?
Unlikely. There’s no blade to break and nothing forces its way in. You’ll waste the stick and get a poor session, but the device should be fine. Don’t make a habit of it.
Will inserting a TEREA into my 3 Duo damage it?
It can. The blade is the fragile part of that device, and pushing it into a sealed stick with a metal element inside is exactly the kind of force that chips or snaps blades. This is the direction to avoid.
Can I take the metal element out of a TEREA stick to use it in a blade device?
No. Opening a stick ruins the tobacco plug and the seal, and what’s left won’t heat properly in either system. Used sticks should go into general waste with the element still inside.
Are HEETS still available in the UAE?
Availability has shrunk as PMI has pushed the ILUMA system, and TEREA is now the wider range in this market. If you’re weighing up whether to switch, we’ve covered it in why UAE users are moving from HEETS to TEREA.
Do Lambda devices take both HEETS and TEREA?
The Lambda models listed on our site are induction devices, so they take TEREA. Don’t assume a device handles both systems just because it’s third-party. Check what heating method it uses before buying.
