A TEREA stick has four things going on under its paper wrap: a sealed tobacco section with a metal Smartcore heating element buried in the middle of it, an airflow section above the tobacco, a mouthpiece filter you draw through, and seals at both ends that keep everything contained. The tobacco is real, the metal element is what your device heats, and the sealed design is the reason your ILUMA never needs the scraping and brushing that older IQOS devices did.
The four main parts
The outer wrap. From outside, a TEREA stick looks like a short, smooth cigarette. The wrap is paper, but unlike a cigarette it never burns. It only holds the segments together and carries the flavor line color so you can tell an Amber from a Turquoise at a glance.
The tobacco section. This is the bottom part, the end you insert into the device. It contains real tobacco, processed into a compact plug rather than loose shredded leaves like a cigarette. That processing matters: a dense, uniform plug heats evenly, while loose leaf would heat in patches.
The Smartcore element. Buried inside the tobacco plug is a small stainless steel heating element. You cannot see it and you never touch it. When the stick sits inside an ILUMA, the device’s magnetic field makes this element heat up, and the heat spreads from the center of the tobacco outward. The airflow and mouthpiece section. Between the tobacco and your lips, the stick has a section that lets the aerosol travel and cool slightly before it reaches the filter you draw through.

Why the stick is sealed at both ends
Pick up a HEETS stick and you’ll see exposed tobacco at one end. Pick up a TEREA stick and you won’t. Both ends are closed.
The seal does three jobs:

Real tobacco, not e-liquid
Worth stating plainly because new users ask this a lot: TEREA contains actual tobacco with nicotine. It is not a vape cartridge and there is no e-liquid inside. Nicotine is addictive, and heating instead of burning does not make TEREA risk free. It changes how the tobacco is consumed, not what it is.
Same anatomy, different flavors
Every TEREA stick shares this structure. An Amber from Kazakhstan and a Black Menthol from Japan are built the same way. What changes is the tobacco blend itself: the leaf selection, the strength, and whether menthol or other flavor elements are added to the blend.

What happens to each part during a session
During roughly 6 minutes of use, the Smartcore element heats, the tobacco around it warms and releases aerosol, the airflow section carries that aerosol up, and you draw it through the mouthpiece. The wrap and seals stay intact the whole time. When the session ends (the device stops it automatically), the element cools and the stick is done. Should you ever open a TEREA stick?
No, and there’s no reason to. The parts aren’t reusable, the tobacco plug isn’t usable in anything else, and the metal element inside is the reason used sticks should go in general waste rather than organic waste. If a stick seems faulty, the fix is a replacement stick, not surgery.
One design, specific devices
Everything above only works when the stick sits inside a device with an induction coil. That’s the ILUMA series, the ILUMA i series, and compatible Lambda devices.
