IQOS ILUMA i Prime Review: Is the Premium Experience Worth It?
The ILUMA i Prime is the top model in the IQOS ILUMA i range, and it adds four things over the older ILUMA generation: a touchscreen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, and FlexBattery. It heats TEREA sticks exactly the same way every other ILUMA does, so the taste and the stick compatibility are identical. What you’re paying extra for is control and finish, not a better smoke. If you use your device heavily and get interrupted often, Pause Mode alone can justify the upgrade. If you go through two or three sticks a day and never look at your device between sessions, the ILUMA i Standard gives you the same features in a plainer body, and the original ILUMA gives you the same taste for less.
What the ILUMA i Prime adds over older ILUMA models
Four features are genuinely new to the ILUMA i generation. None of them exist on the original ILUMA, ILUMA One or ILUMA Prime.
| Feature | What it does | Real-world value |
|---|---|---|
| Touch Screen | Shows time remaining, uses left on the holder, and preheating status | High if you check status often, low if you don’t |
| Pause Mode | Pause a session for up to 8 minutes and resume it | High for anyone who gets interrupted mid-session |
| FlexPuff | May add up to 4 extra puffs inside the 6-minute session | Moderate, and it varies per user |
| FlexBattery | Switch the holder between Performance and Eco modes | Moderate, mostly a battery lifespan play |
The heating system is unchanged. It’s the same SMARTCORE induction that every ILUMA uses, which is why there’s no taste difference between this and a basic ILUMA One. If you want that explained properly, see how TEREA sticks work.
The touchscreen: useful, not essential
The screen replaces the LED dots on older models with actual information: how much time is left in your session, how many uses the holder has left, and whether it’s still preheating.
That last one matters more than it sounds. On older ILUMA devices you waited for a vibration and hoped. Here you can see it.
Where it’s less useful: if you’re the kind of user who inserts a stick, waits for the buzz, and never looks at the device again, you’re paying for a screen you won’t read.
Pause Mode: the feature people actually upgrade for
You can pause a session for up to 8 minutes and pick it up where you left off. Swipe down across the full screen to pause, swipe up to resume. It re-heats and buzzes when it’s ready.
The restrictions are real and worth knowing before you buy:
- It only works in Performance Mode, not Eco Mode
- You have to activate it within the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs of the session
- You get one pause per two consecutive uses, not one per session
- If you don’t resume within 8 minutes, the holder shuts off and the stick is done
- Using Pause disables FlexPuff for that session
So it’s not an unlimited pause button. It’s a “someone just called me” button, and for that it works well. If your day involves meetings, driving, or a job where you can’t finish a session in one go, this is the single strongest reason to pick an ILUMA i over an older ILUMA.
FlexPuff: real, but don’t buy the device for it
FlexPuff analyses how you’re puffing and may add up to 4 extra puffs, still inside the 6-minute session window. It’s on by default and runs automatically, so there’s nothing to press.
The honest caveat, which IQOS states themselves: activation and puff count depend on your individual usage pattern, so not every user gets the extra puffs on every stick. It also won’t trigger at all if you used Pause Mode in that session.
Treat it as a bonus rather than a headline feature. If you’re a slow, light puffer, you’ll probably see it. If you finish a stick quickly, you may never notice it.
FlexBattery: two modes, one tradeoff
FlexBattery lets you choose how the holder battery behaves:
- Performance Mode (default): up to 3 consecutive uses without pausing, or 2 consecutive uses if you use Pause for one of them
- Eco Mode: one use at a time, no Pause Mode, but it extends holder battery lifespan by up to a year when used consistently
Eco Mode is set through the IQOS app, not on the device. That’s worth knowing before you buy, because if you never install the app you effectively never get Eco Mode.
The pocket charger holds about 20 uses on a full charge, which is roughly a pack of TEREA before you need to plug in.
Prime vs Standard vs One: which one should you buy?
All three ILUMA i models share the same four smart features. The differences are physical.
| Model | Body | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| ILUMA i One | All-in-one, no separate charger | Light users, travel, lowest price in the range |
| ILUMA i Standard | Holder plus pocket charger, familiar ILUMA shape | Most people, best value in the i range |
| ILUMA i Prime | Larger wrapped charger, premium finish, holder cover | Heavy users who want the finish and the door |
If you’re choosing purely on features, the Standard gives you everything the Prime does. The Prime’s case is build quality, the covered holder bay, and how it looks and feels in the hand. That’s a legitimate reason to spend more, but it isn’t a functional one. The full breakdown is in our ILUMA One vs Standard vs Prime comparison.
Should you upgrade from an older ILUMA?
Only if one of these applies:
- You get interrupted mid-session regularly and want Pause Mode
- Your current holder battery is degrading and you were replacing it anyway
- You want the touchscreen
Reasons that are not good enough on their own: better taste (there isn’t any), better compatibility (identical), or FlexPuff (too inconsistent to pay for). We’ve laid out the full generation gap in IQOS ILUMA vs ILUMA i.
If you’re coming from a blade device like the IQOS 3 Duo, the upgrade case is completely different and much stronger, because your old sticks won’t work at all. Check the TEREA compatibility guide first.
Which sticks work with it
TEREA, and only stick types built with a metal core. Every edition works: browse TEREA Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Japan, UAE and Armenia editions, or the full TEREA range.
HEETS will not work. There’s no metal element inside a HEETS stick, so induction has nothing to heat.
Cleaning: there isn’t any
Because the tobacco stays sealed inside the stick and nothing burns, no residue builds up inside the device. There is no cleaning tool, no cleaning sticks, no monthly ritual. Wipe the outside occasionally and that’s it.
This is one of the clearest wins over blade-based IQOS devices, where cleaning was a regular chore. Owners of those devices can still find our IQOS cleaning guide useful.
Colours available
We stock the ILUMA i Prime in four finishes: Aspen Green, Black, Blue and Garnet Red.
The verdict
Buy the ILUMA i Prime if you want the best-built device in the range and you’ll actually use Pause Mode and the screen. It’s a refinement of a system that already worked, not a reinvention of it.
Buy the ILUMA i Standard if you want the same features for less and don’t care about the finish. Buy the original ILUMA range if you just want great TEREA taste and none of the smart features, because the flavour is identical and the price is lower.
Whichever you choose, we deliver across Abu Dhabi and the UAE with cash on delivery. Browse the full ILUMA i range to compare.
FAQ
Does the ILUMA i Prime taste better than a normal ILUMA?
No. Every ILUMA device uses the same induction heating, so the flavour comes entirely from the TEREA stick, not the device. Anyone telling you the Prime tastes better is selling you something.
Do I need the IQOS app?
Not to use the device day to day. You do need it to switch FlexBattery into Eco Mode or to turn FlexPuff off, since those settings aren’t on the device itself.
How many sticks can I get before charging?
Around 20 uses from a full pocket charger, so roughly one pack of TEREA. The holder itself handles up to 3 consecutive uses in Performance Mode before it needs to go back in the charger.
Can I use Pause Mode on every stick?
No. It’s available once per two consecutive uses, only in Performance Mode, and only if you activate it in the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs.
Will my old HEETS or IQOS 3 Duo sticks work in it?
No. HEETS has no metal heating element, so an induction device can’t heat it. You need TEREA.
