How to Use IQOS ILUMA for the First Time: Setup Guide
Charge the device fully, insert a TEREA stick until the printed line disappears, and wait for the vibration. That’s the whole setup. There is no button to press, no blade to line up, and no cleaning to do afterwards. ILUMA starts heating automatically the moment a stick goes in, takes about 20 seconds to be ready, and gives you roughly 6 minutes or 14 puffs per stick. Everything below fills in the details a first-time user actually needs.
Before your first session
Two things to do out of the box.
Charge it fully. Every ILUMA ships partially charged, not fully. Plug it in with the supplied USB-C cable and leave it until the charging indicator shows complete. On ILUMA One you charge the single all-in-one unit. On ILUMA Standard and ILUMA Prime you charge the pocket charger, and the holder charges from the pocket charger.
Get the right sticks. ILUMA only heats TEREA. Not HEETS, not any other stick brand. Browse the TEREA range before your device arrives so you’re not stuck with a charged device and nothing to put in it.

If you’ve owned an older IQOS, the missing cleaning tool is not an oversight. ILUMA doesn’t need one, and the reason is explained in how TEREA sticks work.
Your first session, step by step
1. Take out a TEREA stick. Any flavor, any edition. Kazakhstan, Japan, Indonesia, UAE and Armenia sticks all work identically.
2. Insert it into the holder. Push it in gently and straight down until the printed line on the stick is no longer visible. Don’t twist it. Don’t force it past that point.
3. Wait. ILUMA starts heating on its own as soon as the stick is fully inserted. You don’t press anything. Heating takes around 20 seconds.
4. Feel the vibration. A short vibration and a steady light tell you it’s ready. That’s your cue to take the first puff.
5. Use it. A session runs about 6 minutes or up to 14 puffs, whichever comes first. Draw gently. A hard, fast pull gives you less vapor, not more, because the tobacco needs a moment between puffs.
6. Watch for the end warning. A second vibration signals the session is nearly over, with roughly 30 seconds or two puffs left.
7. Pull the stick out. Straight up and out when the session ends. The stick comes out whole, with the tobacco intact, because nothing burned. Bin it in general waste. Don’t try to reuse it.
Understanding the lights and vibrations
| Signal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Vibration after inserting a stick, light comes on | Heating has started |
| Vibration and steady light | Ready to use |
| Light shows battery level while charging | Charging in progress |
| Vibration near the end | About 30 seconds or two puffs left |
| Light turns off | Session over, remove the stick |
| Flashing or unusual light pattern | Battery too low, or the device needs a reset |
Battery and charging
ILUMA One holds enough charge for around 20 consecutive sessions before it needs a recharge, which is why it suits people who don’t want to carry two pieces.
ILUMA Standard and Prime work differently. The holder handles a couple of sessions back to back, then returns to the pocket charger to top up. The pocket charger itself holds around 20 sessions’ worth of power. In practice you keep the pocket charger in a bag or pocket and the holder does the work.
Charge with the supplied USB-C cable. Avoid leaving the device in a hot car, which in Abu Dhabi summer is the fastest way to shorten any lithium battery’s life.
Cleaning: what changed
Nothing to do. This is the biggest practical difference from older IQOS devices.
Blade devices heated the tobacco from the outside, so residue built up inside the holder and had to be scraped and cleaned regularly. ILUMA heats from inside the stick, the tobacco stays sealed, and no residue reaches the device. Wipe the outside occasionally if you want it clean, and that’s all.
If you also own an older blade device, the IQOS cleaning guide covers that one.
Do you need the IQOS app?
No. The device works fully without it. The app adds battery monitoring, device locating, firmware updates and the option to turn auto-start off if you’d rather press a button. Useful, not essential. Skip it if you don’t want another app.
Five mistakes first-time users make
Twisting the stick on insertion. An old IQOS habit. There’s no blade to protect and twisting can damage the stick. Push straight in.
Pushing past the line. Insert until the printed line disappears, not further.
Puffing too hard or too fast. ILUMA rewards a slow, gentle draw. Rapid pulling produces less vapor and a flat taste.
Expecting cigarette smoke. The aerosol is thinner and lighter than smoke. It’s not a fault, it’s how the system works.
Trying HEETS. HEETS have no metal element inside, so an ILUMA has nothing to heat. The full explanation is in can you use HEETS in ILUMA.
If it doesn’t heat
Three things to check, in order:
- Battery. A low battery is the most common cause. Charge it fully and try again.
- Stick type. Confirm you’re using TEREA, not HEETS or another brand. The TEREA compatibility guide lists what works with what.
- Insertion depth. If the stick isn’t fully in, the device won’t detect it and heating won’t start.
If it’s charged, using a TEREA stick, correctly inserted, and still doing nothing, the device needs a reset or warranty support rather than another attempt.
Choosing your first flavor
Tobacco flavors like Amber suit anyone coming from regular cigarettes. Menthol flavors like Turquoise suit menthol smokers. Start with one pack of each rather than a carton of something you might not like. The beginner flavor guide narrows it down properly.

FAQ
Do I need to press a button to start ILUMA?
No. Auto-start begins heating as soon as a TEREA stick is fully inserted. You can switch auto-start off in the IQOS app if you prefer manual control.
Can I stop a session halfway and finish it later?
No. Once a stick has been heated it’s done. Removing it mid-session ends it, and reinserting won’t give you a proper second session. Standard ILUMA has no pause function.
How long does ILUMA take to heat up?
Around 20 seconds from insertion to the ready vibration.
Do I need to clean my ILUMA?
No. There’s no internal residue because the tobacco stays sealed inside the stick. An occasional wipe of the outside is enough.
Can I use my old IQOS charger with ILUMA?
Use the supplied USB-C cable and adapter. Other USB-C chargers generally work, but a mismatched high-output adapter isn’t worth the risk on a device this expensive.
What if I insert the stick and nothing happens?
Check battery level, confirm it’s a TEREA stick, and make sure it’s inserted until the printed line disappears. Those three cover nearly every case.
