Slate is the dark finish in the ORIGINALS ONE range, and on this device it’s the practical choice more than the stylish one.

The reason is cleaning. Philip Morris recommends cleaning ORIGINALS ONE daily, which means removing the cap, working a tool into the chamber and handling the body every single day. That’s more contact than an induction device ever sees, and fingerprints and small marks accumulate accordingly. Slate hides them better than any of the other three finishes.

The status lights, and how to read them

Four LEDs handle everything on this device, and they read especially clearly against a dark body.

Battery level. Short-press the button and the lights show charge. Four lights means over 75%, one light means it needs charging soon.

Session countdown. During a session the same lights show how much of it remains, which is a function ORIGINALS ONE has and the two-piece DUO doesn’t.

End-of-session warning. At the last 30 seconds or last two puffs, the device vibrates once while one light pulses white. A session never ends without notice.

Blinking red. This means the device is outside its operating range of 0 to 40°C. In Abu Dhabi it almost always means it’s been sitting somewhere hot. Let it cool and it recovers on its own.

If red persists after cooling, reset it: press and hold the button for 10 seconds, then release. Every status light turns off and back on to confirm the reset went through. If the red light still persists after that, it needs Customer Care rather than another reset attempt.

Three sessions in a row

Something that surprises people comparing this against the two-piece option: ORIGINALS ONE gives three consecutive uses, where ORIGINALS DUO gives two from its holder before needing the pocket charger.

DUO’s advantage is different: its charger keeps refilling the holder through the day, so it handles long stretches away from power better. ORIGINALS ONE gives 20 uses and then wants a socket.

Neither is better across the board. ONE suits back-to-back sessions and simpler carrying; DUO suits a long day out.

The blade, and how not to break it

HEATCONTROL heats through a flat, wide ceramic blade with platinum and gold tracks, sliding into the HEETS stick so its whole surface contacts the tobacco. The width is what produces the even, cigarette-like draw.

Ceramic is brittle, and twisting a stick while removing it is what cracks these blades. A cracked blade ends the device rather than damaging it, and it’s the single most common cause of death for blade hardware. Pull sticks straight out, every time.

If blade durability genuinely worries you, the third-party Lambda T3 and Lambda CC use titanium steel alloy blades that don’t fail this way, though neither carries a Philip Morris warranty.

What it takes

HEETS and other blade-compatible sticks. TEREA will not work, because TEREA is built around a metal element that induction heats rather than a blade.

Cleaning routine

Daily, per Philip Morris. Wait for the device to cool, slide the cap upwards and remove it completely, then insert the rotating head of the IQOS Dual Cleaning Tool and turn gently, followed by the sweeping head moved side to side.

Two hard rules from the user guide: never clean it with any cleaning agent, and never immerse it or let it contact water or other liquids.
