Black Yellow Menthol is what happens when you take the lemon stick of the Japanese range and stop being polite about it.

The Black prefix runs right through the TEREA world and always means the same thing: the intensified version of whatever follows it. Here it takes Yellow Menthol‘s citrus-and-menthol formula and pushes the cooling to the top of the range while turning the citrus sharper and drier.

It’s one of three sticks that share that maximum cooling class in Japan, and the only one where citrus is the fruit doing the work.

About the flavor

The hierarchy puts menthol first and citrus immediately behind it, with the tobacco base pushed well back. That ordering is the whole difference from the standard Yellow Menthol, where citrus leads and the cooling supports it.

The citrus itself reads as lime zest rather than lemon. It’s sharper, more acidic, and noticeably drier than the standard version, which some tasters find bracing and others find a touch severe. It isn’t a sweet flavor and it doesn’t pretend to be.

Aroma is where Japanese menthols separate from other editions. The Japan range runs a higher concentration of menthol oils than Kazakhstan or Indonesia sticks do, and the cooling agents are worked into the blend rather than sitting on the surface. The result carries further in a room than most sticks and stays sharp rather than turning sweet.

Across a session the intensity holds where lesser menthols fade. The opening draws are the coldest, with the citrus at its brightest. Through the middle the dark tobacco base becomes more visible underneath, and the acidity settles into something more balanced. The final third is the driest part of the stick, where the cooling stays at full strength and the citrus recedes. It finishes clean and cold, with none of the syrupy aftertaste artificial fruit flavors leave behind. Fourteen puffs, and the fourteenth is as cold as the first.

One thing worth knowing: draw speed changes this stick more than most. Sharper draws push the menthol intensity up; slower draws let the tobacco base and the citrus come through. If it feels too aggressive, slow down before you give up on it.

Where it sits among the Japanese menthols

Japan carries ten menthol variants, and the top of that ladder is worth understanding properly because three sticks share it.

Black Menthol is the pure one: maximum cooling on a dark tobacco base, no fruit, no sweetness. The reference point for the whole class.

Black Purple Menthol takes that same cooling and adds ripe blackberry. Sweeter, rounder, and the more forgiving of the three.

Black Yellow Menthol is the citrus one, and the driest. Where the Purple is sweet, this is acidic.

Below them, Yellow Menthol is the standard version of this profile at medium cooling, and Bright Menthol goes orchard-fruit instead, apple and pear at a lighter intensity. The full ladder is on our TEREA Japan flavors page.

Coming from another edition, the closest relative is Green Zing in the Kazakhstan range, which shares the sharp citrus-menthol idea at lower intensity and a lower price. The reason imported editions cost differently is set out in why imported TEREA costs less.

Who it suits, and who it doesn’t

It suits you if standard menthols read as mildly cool rather than genuinely cold, if you want citrus without sweetness, or if you want a daytime stick in Abu Dhabi heat that actually registers as refreshing.

It doesn’t if you’re new to menthol sticks. Start with Menthol or Mint from the same range and work up. It also isn’t the one to buy if you like your menthols sweet, since the acidity here goes the other way entirely.

If you’re unsure, buy a pack rather than a carton. This is a flavor people either take to immediately or don’t.

In the pack

20 sticks per pack, 200 per carton across 10 packs, with cartons cheaper per stick. Stock is original Japan-market product, factory-sealed, printed in Japanese with Japanese health warnings and the flavor name in Latin script so you can read it without reading Japanese.

Japanese packaging on an imported edition is normal and expected. What you should never see is a broken seal, a missing health warning or a misspelled flavor name, and our guide to spotting fake TEREA covers the rest of the checks.

Using it

Insert the stick printed-end up into any ILUMA holder without twisting. Current devices start heating on their own; older ILUMA models need the button held until the first vibration, and a second vibration signals ready. Expect up to 14 puffs across roughly six minutes at 0.5mg nicotine, and the used stick comes out whole for general waste because nothing burns. The mechanism is explained in how TEREA sticks work, and full stick specifications are in how many puffs are in a TEREA stick.

Two things specific to the Black series. These sticks carry a heavier menthol oil load than most, so they leave more aroma in a holder than a plain tobacco stick does. If a light flavour is next in your rotation, give the device a few minutes first, or run this one last.

And if your device has Pause Mode, be aware that resuming a paused Black stick often reads noticeably colder on the first puff, because the menthol oils settle during the break. That’s expected rather than a fault.

Devices

Works in every induction device: IQOS ILUMA One, Standard and Prime, the full ILUMA i series, and Lambda i8, i9 and i10. Blade devices including the IQOS 3 Duo cannot heat TEREA at all, and every compatible and incompatible model is listed in our device compatibility guide.

If you own a Lambda with adjustable temperature, this stick rewards the lower end of the range. High heat pushes the acidity up and can make it harsh; a cooler setting keeps the citrus readable underneath the menthol.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from standard Yellow Menthol?

Cooling and dryness. The standard version leads with citrus at medium cooling; this one leads with maximum cooling and turns the citrus sharper, more acidic and considerably drier.

Is it lemon or lime?

Most tasters read it as lime zest rather than lemon, which is part of why it comes across as sharper than the standard Yellow Menthol.

Which is the strongest Japanese menthol?

Black Menthol, for pure cooling with no fruit at all. Black Yellow Menthol and Black Purple Menthol match its cooling class but add citrus and blackberry respectively.

Is it sweet?

No, and deliberately so. The acidity runs the opposite direction. If you want strong cooling with sweetness, Black Purple Menthol is the one.

Why does it smell stronger than my other sticks?

Japanese menthols carry a higher concentration of menthol oils than other editions, and the Black series more than the rest. It’s noticeable in a room and it’s why the flavour holds to the last puff.

Should I start with this one?

Only if you already know you want maximum cooling. New menthol users are better served by Menthol or Mint from the same range.
