Cleaning sticks are the finishing step of the routine, and the part most people skip.

The cleaning tool does the mechanical work: brushing residue loose from the heating chamber and the base of the blade. Cleaning sticks lift what the brush leaves behind, and they’re the only intended way to clean the inside of the cap.

Thirty sticks per pack, individually wrapped so each one stays clean until you use it.

When you actually need them

Two moments in the routine, and neither is optional if you want the flavour back.

After the brush. Once you’ve used both heads of the cleaning tool, insert a cleaning stick straight into the chamber and clean the bottom with a semicircular motion. This is what removes the fine residue a brush pushes around rather than lifts.

Inside the cap. Work a stick down from the top of the cap. Tobacco taste fades noticeably when the cap is dirty, and the brush can’t reach up there.

Philip Morris recommends the full routine after every pack of 20 sticks, which works out at roughly one and a half cleaning sticks per pack of HEETS. A pack of 30 lasts most people a couple of months.

How to use one safely

Straight in, never against the blade. Don’t push or knock the stick into the blade. It’s ceramic and it’s the part that ends a device when it breaks.

Clean the chamber bottom, not the blade. Philip Morris is explicit that the blade itself shouldn’t be cleaned.

If it gets blocked, don’t force it. Use the cleaning tool to clear the blockage instead.

Let the device cool first. At least 30 seconds after the last stick, and avoid pressing the button while you work.

Our full cleaning guide covers the whole sequence.

How to tell it worked

The area around the blade should look grey or white, with no visible particles and no dark coating. If it still looks dark, run the tool and a fresh stick again.

What not to substitute

Cotton buds and toothpicks are the two things people reach for, and Philip Morris advises against both. They fray, leave fibres inside the chamber, and can damage the device.

Cleaning sticks are shaped and sized for the chamber, which is why they reach what a bud can’t and don’t leave anything behind.

Which devices need them

Any ceramic blade device: IQOS ORIGINALS DUO, ORIGINALS ONE, IQOS 3 DUO, 3 MULTI and 2.4 Plus.

Not needed for ILUMA or ILUMA i devices, which require no cleaning at all.

A lemon-scented version is available if you’d rather the routine didn’t smell of nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How many will I get through?

Roughly one and a half per pack of 20 tobacco sticks, if you follow the recommended routine. A pack of 30 lasts most people around two months.

Do I still need the cleaning tool?

Yes. The tool brushes residue loose; the sticks lift what’s left and clean the cap. They’re two steps of one routine rather than alternatives.

Can I use a cotton bud instead?

Philip Morris advises against it. Buds fray and can leave fibres inside the chamber.

What if a stick gets stuck?

Don’t force it. Use the cleaning tool to unblock the chamber.

Do ILUMA devices need these?

No. ILUMA and ILUMA i need no cleaning at all.
