Same job as the standard cleaning sticks, with a lemon scent added.

That sounds like a small difference and for most people it is, but there’s a practical reason it exists. Cleaning a blade device means putting your hands near a chamber that has held twenty burnt-smelling tobacco sticks. The residue smells, the tool smells afterwards, and if you clean at a desk or a kitchen table, so does the room for a few minutes. A lemon scent covers that.

What they’re for

Cleaning sticks are the finishing step, used after the cleaning tool has done the brushing.

Two moments in the routine call for one. After the brush, insert a stick straight into the heating chamber and clean the bottom with a semicircular motion, which lifts fine residue the brush pushes around rather than removes. And for the cap, work a stick down from the top, since the brush can’t reach up there and a dirty cap is a common cause of flavour fading.

Follow the recommended routine after every pack of 20 tobacco sticks and you’ll use roughly one and a half sticks each time.

Scent aside, the rules are identical

Never push or knock the stick against the blade. Clean the bottom of the heating chamber only, not the blade itself.

Let the device cool at least 30 seconds after your last stick, and avoid pressing the button while you work.

If a stick jams, don’t force it. Use the cleaning tool to clear the chamber.

Don’t substitute a cotton bud or toothpick. Both fray and can leave material behind or damage the device, which is why Philip Morris advises against them.

Our full cleaning guide walks through the complete sequence.

Lemon or standard?

Function is the same. The scent is the whole difference, and it comes down to where and how you clean.

If you clean at a desk, in an office, or anywhere the smell would be noticed, lemon is worth the swap. If you clean over a bin at home and never think about it, the standard version does the same job.

One thing lemon sticks won’t do is change how your tobacco tastes. They clean the chamber and evaporate; they don’t leave a flavour behind, and anyone hoping for a citrus note in their next stick will be disappointed. If citrus is what you’re after, that belongs in the sticks themselves: Yellow in the tobacco range, or Japan’s Yellow Menthol and Bright Menthol in the menthol line.

Frequently asked questions

Will the lemon scent affect the taste of my sticks?

No. The stick cleans the chamber and evaporates. It doesn’t leave a flavour behind.

Are they any better at cleaning than the standard ones?

No, the cleaning performance is the same. The scent is the only difference.

How many do I need?

Around one and a half per pack of 20 tobacco sticks, following the recommended cleaning interval.

Can I use them on an ILUMA?

You don’t need to. ILUMA and ILUMA i devices require no cleaning.

Can I use one on the cap as well as the chamber?

Yes, and you should. Working a stick down the inside of the cap from the top is part of the routine, and a dirty cap is a common reason flavour fades.
