The Neon Limited Edition is the boldest ILUMA Prime ever made, and the only one that isn’t part of the permanent range. Philip Morris built it around anodised amethyst purple aluminium, wrapped the pocket charger in a knitted-textured cover in purple and magenta, and finished the holder with a hammered ring. The result won a Red Dot Design Award in 2022, which no other device in the ILUMA line has done.

Everything inside is standard Prime. Same induction heating, same battery, same two sticks back to back. What you’re buying is the finish and the fact that it won’t be restocked.

Why this one is different

The four permanent Prime colours are designed to blend in. Bronze Taupe is warm, Gold Khaki is understated, Obsidian Black is neutral, Jade Green is quietly distinctive. The Neon edition goes the other way entirely.

It came out of a summer colour project that ran across the whole ILUMA family, released to mark more than twenty million adult users switching to the platform worldwide. The Prime version got the most involved treatment of the three: anodised purple metal rather than paint, a woven-look wrap in two tones, and a hammered texture on the finishing ring that catches light differently as you turn it.

Anodised colour sits inside the metal rather than on top of it, which is why the purple has depth to it and why it doesn’t chip the way a coated finish can.

The Red Dot award matters more than most marketing badges. It’s a design competition judged on aesthetics and execution, and this is the only ILUMA device to have taken one.

Limited means limited

This was produced as a finite run, not as an ongoing line. When stock is gone, Philip Morris doesn’t make more, and the four permanent colours are what remains.

That has a practical implication worth thinking about before you order. If you want it, buying now is the decision. It also means the device holds interest among collectors in a way standard colours don’t, and it’s the ILUMA most likely to be recognised by another user across a table.

What’s in the kit

The ILUMA Prime holder in the Neon finish, the matching pocket charger with its knitted wrap fitted, a USB-C charging cable, a power adapter, and the documentation and warranty card.

TEREA sticks are sold separately, and the device does nothing without them, so most people add a pack or two to the order. There’s no cleaning kit, because Prime never needs cleaning inside.

Using it

Charge the pocket charger fully before the first session, around 135 minutes over USB-C. Hold the charger button for four seconds to switch the device on.

Take the holder out, insert a TEREA stick to the line on the filter, and wait for the vibration with the lights pulsing. Heating begins automatically, or press the button for a second. When the lights hold steady, draw normally for up to 14 puffs or about six minutes, with a vibration warning you at the last 30 seconds. Slide the used stick out and return the holder to the charger.

Autostop ends a session if the stick is moved or removed part way through, so you don’t lose half of one by putting the device down. A short press on the charger button shows the battery level, and a yellow blink means it needs charging.

If the device blinks white twice, it’s outside its 0 to 40°C operating range. In Abu Dhabi that usually means a hot car, and it needs to cool before it will run. The first-time ILUMA setup guide covers everything else.

Looking after a limited edition

The anodised finish is durable, but a device you can’t replace deserves a little more care than one you can.

Heat is the main risk, both for the battery and for the wrap. The operating range tops out at 40°C, and a parked car here goes well past that in summer. Keep it out of direct sun, avoid using it while it charges, and use the supplied cable and adapter.

The knitted wrap cleans with a damp cloth and nothing stronger. It’s removable, held on by linear magnets, so you could fit a standard Prime wrap over it if you wanted to protect the original, though most owners of this edition are buying it precisely because they want it seen. Wraps aren’t covered by the device warranty either way.

Why there’s no cleaning

Older IQOS devices used a ceramic blade that pushed into the tobacco stick, gathered residue, and needed regular cleaning.

Prime has no blade. Smartcore induction heats a metal element sealed inside each TEREA stick through a magnetic field, so nothing in the holder touches tobacco at any point. Sticks come out whole and no residue builds up. How TEREA sticks work explains the system.

That design is also why it takes TEREA and nothing else. HEETS have no metal element for induction to heat, and TEREA won’t work in an IQOS 3 Duo either, which we’ve covered in HEETS in ILUMA and TEREA in IQOS 3 Duo. Every model is listed in the device compatibility guide.

If the Neon edition sells out

The four permanent Prime colours are Obsidian Black, Bronze Taupe, Gold Khaki and Jade Green, all identical in performance and all still in production. They’re gathered on the ILUMA Prime collection page.

If Prime itself is more device than you need, ILUMA Standard matches it on performance in plastic for less, and ILUMA One is the all-in-one entry model. The newer ILUMA i series adds a touchscreen, Pause Mode and three consecutive uses, with ILUMA i Prime as the direct successor to this device. Our ILUMA vs ILUMA i comparison covers the generational difference, and Lambda vs IQOS ILUMA assesses the budget alternatives.

One compatibility note that’s useful here: an ILUMA i Prime holder charges in an ILUMA Prime pocket charger and vice versa, so a Neon charger stays useful even if you upgrade the holder later.

Sticks to order with it

All 75 TEREA flavors across five editions are in stock. For a first device, Amber suits full-flavor cigarette smokers, Yellow suits light smokers and Turquoise suits menthol smokers.

Edition changes the price more than the taste. Most customers buy the Kazakhstan range, on cost and for its five Pearl capsule flavors. Armenia is cheaper with a shorter lineup, and the UAE edition is the official local release in Arabic and English packaging. The gap is explained in why imported TEREA costs less, and the whole catalogue is in our full TEREA sticks range.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Neon edition perform differently from a standard Prime?

No. Same heating system, same 2380 mAh charger, same two consecutive uses, same roughly 20 sticks per charge. The difference is entirely in the finish.

Will it be restocked once it sells out?

No. It was made as a limited run rather than a permanent line, so when it’s gone the four standard colours are what remain available.

What exactly makes the finish different?

Anodised amethyst purple aluminium instead of a coated colour, a knitted-texture wrap in purple and magenta, and a hammered finishing ring on the holder. It’s the only ILUMA device to have won a Red Dot Design Award.

Can I swap the wrap?

Yes, it’s removable and held by linear magnets, so a standard Prime wrap will fit. Wraps aren’t covered by the device warranty.

Does anodised purple fade or chip?

Anodised colour sits within the metal rather than on the surface, so it resists chipping better than a painted finish. Prolonged direct sun isn’t good for any device, mostly because of the battery.

How many sticks before charging?

Two back to back from the holder, then a few minutes in the charger. The charger holds around 20 sticks in total.

Can it use HEETS?

No. HEETS have no metal heating element, so an induction device has nothing to heat. TEREA sticks only.
