Sunset Red is the bold finish in the ILUMA Standard range. A warm coral red with a matte surface, it sits at the opposite end of the range from the Pebble neutrals and it’s the device people actually notice on a table.

Every ILUMA Standard performs identically, so the finish is the only thing this page can honestly tell you apart from what’s in the box and how the device behaves.

Why people choose the red one

Two reasons come up repeatedly, and neither is about looks alone.

The first is identification. If anyone else in your home, office or friend group uses IQOS, the neutral finishes look interchangeable at arm’s length, and picking up someone else’s holder by mistake is a common irritation. A red device ends that permanently.

The second is that some people don’t want their device to look like a piece of equipment. Sunset Red reads as a deliberate object rather than something engineered to disappear into a pocket.

If neither of those describes you, the quieter options are Pebble Grey and Pebble Beige as the cool and warm neutrals, Moss Green if you want colour that still stays quiet, and Azure Blue as the middle ground and our best-selling finish. Louder still is the Neon Limited Edition, which is a limited production run rather than a permanent line.

One honest note about brighter finishes: they show fingerprints and small scuffs more readily than dark ones over a year of pocket use. Pebble Grey is the most forgiving of the six if long-term wear matters to you more than standing out. All six sit together on the ILUMA Standard collection page.

What’s in the kit

ILUMA Standard is a two-piece system, so there’s more in the box than an all-in-one device comes with.

Inside: the ILUMA holder in Sunset Red, the matching pocket charger, a USB-C charging cable, a power adapter, and the documentation and warranty card.

TEREA sticks are sold separately and the device is useless without them, so most orders include a pack or two.

No cleaning kit is included, and that’s by design rather than an omission. ILUMA has no blade and never needs cleaning inside.

How the two parts work

The holder runs each session and the pocket charger refills it in between, which is what gets this device through a full day without a wall socket.

Two sticks back to back from the holder, then a few minutes in the charger, and by the time you want a third it’s ready again. The charger carries around 20 sticks in total, a full pack, so one overnight charge covers a normal day.

That’s the practical difference from ILUMA One, which is a single unit that needs a plug once it runs down. The trade is two objects to keep track of rather than one, weighed up properly in our ILUMA One vs Standard vs Prime guide.

Using it

Charge the pocket charger fully before the first session, roughly 135 minutes over USB-C. Hold the charger button for four seconds to switch the device on.

Take the holder out, insert a TEREA stick to the line on the filter, and wait for the vibration and pulsing lights. Heating begins on its own with no button to hold. Once the lights hold steady, draw normally for up to 14 puffs or about six minutes, with a vibration warning you at the last 30 seconds. Remove the used stick and slide the holder back into the charger.

Autostop ends a session if the stick is moved or pulled out part-way, so a distraction doesn’t cost you half a stick. A short press on the charger button shows the battery level, and a yellow blink means it’s time to charge. Our first-time ILUMA setup guide covers the rest.

Nothing to clean

Older IQOS devices heated the stick with a ceramic blade, which collected tobacco residue and needed cleaning as a routine chore.

ILUMA has no blade. Smartcore induction heats a metal element sealed inside each TEREA stick through a magnetic field, so nothing inside the holder ever touches tobacco. Sticks come out whole and nothing accumulates. How TEREA sticks work explains the system.

That design is also why this device takes TEREA and nothing else. HEETS contain no metal element for induction to heat, and TEREA won’t heat in an IQOS 3 Duo. Both directions are covered in HEETS in ILUMA and TEREA in IQOS 3 Duo, with every model listed in the device compatibility guide.

If you’re still choosing a device

Every ILUMA heats the same way, so the decision is shape, features and price.

ILUMA One is the all-in-one entry model, lightest and cheapest, with no pocket charger and no auto-start. ILUMA Standard is the two-piece system in plastic. ILUMA Prime matches Standard on performance and adds aluminium with a replaceable leather-effect wrap. The newer ILUMA i series adds a touchscreen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and three consecutive uses.

Our ILUMA vs ILUMA i comparison covers whether the newer range is worth the difference, and Lambda vs IQOS ILUMA assesses the budget alternatives honestly.

Sticks to order with it

We stock all 75 TEREA flavors across five editions. For a first device, Amber suits full-flavor cigarette smokers, Yellow suits light smokers, and Turquoise suits menthol smokers.

Edition changes the price more than the taste. Most customers buy the Kazakhstan range, on cost and for its five Pearl capsule flavors. Armenia is cheaper with a shorter lineup, and the official UAE edition comes in Arabic and English packaging at RRP. The reason behind the gap is in why imported TEREA costs less, and everything we stock is in the full TEREA sticks range.

Care in the UAE

Heat shortens lithium battery life faster than use does, and a parked car through an Abu Dhabi summer is the worst place to leave either part. Keep both out of direct sun.

Use the supplied cable and adapter, and avoid running the holder while the charger is plugged in. Nothing else needs maintaining.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sunset Red perform differently from the other colours?

No. Every ILUMA Standard shares the same heating, battery, consecutive uses and charge capacity. The finish is the only difference.

Is it a bright red?

It’s a warm coral red rather than a hard primary red, with a matte finish that keeps it from looking glossy or plastic.

Does the finish scuff easily?

Brighter and lighter finishes show fingerprints and scuffs more than dark ones over long-term pocket use. Pebble Grey is the most forgiving of the six if that concerns you.

Are TEREA sticks included?

No. The kit has the holder, pocket charger, cable, adapter and documentation. Sticks are ordered separately.

How many sticks back to back?

Two from the holder, then a few minutes in the charger. The charger holds around 20 sticks in total.

Does it start heating automatically?

Yes. Insert the stick to the filter line and it begins on its own. ILUMA One is the model that needs a button press.

Does it need cleaning?

No. There’s no blade, so nothing collects inside and there’s no cleaning routine.

Can it use HEETS?

No. HEETS have no metal heating element, so induction has nothing to heat. TEREA sticks only.
