TEREA Japan Edition Guide: Rich Regular, the Menthol Line & Pearl Flavors
TEREA Japan is the version of TEREA made by Philip Morris for the Japanese market, and it’s the edition most likely to confuse a first-time buyer. Instead of color names like Amber and Turquoise, Japan packs use descriptive names like Regular, Rich Regular and Black Menthol. The sticks themselves are standard TEREA with the same Smartcore element and the same device compatibility. What changes is the naming system and the lineup, which leans heavily toward tobacco variants and menthol strengths rather than fruit flavors. Japan is also the market where the Pearl capsule flavors first appeared.
Why Japan flavor names look different
Most TEREA markets name flavors by color. Japan names them by character.
A Japanese pack tells you what the flavor tastes like: Regular means plain tobacco, Menthol means menthol, and modifiers like Rich, Bold, Smooth, Warm and Black adjust intensity in a predictable way. Once you know the modifiers, the whole range reads clearly:
- Regular = tobacco base, no menthol
- Menthol = menthol base
- Rich / Bold = stronger, fuller
- Smooth / Balanced = lighter, easier
- Warm = rounder, sweeter tobacco notes
- Black = intensified version of that flavor
So Black Menthol is a stronger Menthol, and Bold Regular is a stronger Regular. No color codes to memorise.

The Black pairs are the useful part here. If you like Purple Menthol but want it colder and stronger, Black Purple Menthol is the same flavor turned up. No other edition gives you that kind of matched pairing.
Pearl capsule flavors
Japan carries two Pearl flavors, both with the crushable capsule in the filter:
- Sun Pearl — tropical citrus capsule over a menthol base
- Oasis Pearl — cooler and greener, more herbal than Sun Pearl
Squeeze the capsule before your first puff for full flavor throughout, or mid-session to switch things up halfway. Kazakhstan carries a wider Pearl range if capsules are your main interest, and the TEREA Pearl series compares them all.
What about the Dimensions series?

Is Japan stock better quality?
It has a reputation for it, and Japanese-market production is well regarded, but there’s no different grade of tobacco going into Japan packs. Every TEREA edition is made to the same PMI specification.
What people are usually noticing is blend character rather than quality. The Japan lineup skews drier and more tobacco-forward, with less sweetness than the Indonesian range and less cooling than Kazakhstan’s fruity menthols. If that suits your palate, Japan feels better. That’s preference, not grade.
Will Japan sticks work in my device?
Yes. There’s no regional restriction on TEREA sticks.

Reading a Japanese pack
- Flavor names appear in Latin script, so Rich Regular and Black Menthol are readable even if the rest isn’t
- Warnings and product text are in Japanese
- Pack contents are standard: 20 sticks per pack, 200 per carton
- Menthol variants often carry a visual cue on the pack, but go by the printed name rather than the color
