Rich Regular is the heaviest stick Philip Morris makes for the Japanese market, and it exists for one type of user: the person coming from full-flavor cigarettes who tried a lighter TEREA and thought there was nothing there. Deep, roasted, unapologetically full-bodied tobacco with no menthol, no fruit and no sweetness. It sits at the top of Japan’s seven-step Regular line, and nothing above it exists.

It’s also one of the three best-sellers of the entire Japanese range, which tells you how many people were looking for exactly this.

About the flavor

The hierarchy here is simple because there’s only one thing in the stick: tobacco, and plenty of it. What varies is the character of that tobacco. The profile is dark-roasted, closer to espresso than to a mild cigarette, with malty depth and a woody, nutty undercurrent. There’s a natural bitterness that experienced smokers read as richness rather than harshness, and no added sweetness anywhere to soften it.

The session is front-loaded in intensity. The first draws are the fullest, hitting with the roasted depth immediately rather than building toward it. Through the middle the body stays consistent while the woody, nutty notes come forward and the malt settles behind them. The final third is where this stick earns its name: instead of thinning out the way lighter sticks do, it holds its density right to the fourteenth puff. The finish is long, dry and warm, with the roasted note lingering afterwards. This is not a stick you have three of in an hour.

Where it sits, and what to try instead

Japan’s Regular line runs seven steps and Rich Regular is the last one. Bold Regular directly below it is the flavor most often confused with this one: also strong, also full-bodied, but with a cleaner finish and more malt than roast. Coming from another edition, the closest match is Amber, the best-selling tobacco flavor across every TEREA market. The honest comparison: Amber and Rich Regular occupy the same slot in their ranges, but Rich Regular is deeper and more roasted, while Amber is rounder. How to use

Insert the stick printed-end up into any ILUMA holder, without twisting. Modern devices begin heating automatically; older ILUMA models need the button held until the first vibration, and a second vibration signals ready. Expect up to 14 puffs or roughly 6 minutes, at 0.5mg of nicotine per stick. The used stick comes out whole and goes into general waste, since nothing combusts. One practical note for heavy tobacco flavors: draw slower than you would on a cigarette. Rich Regular delivers plenty on a gentle pull, and drawing hard on it makes the bitterness sharp rather than rich. Most people who dislike this stick on a first try were pulling too hard on it.

It’s the strongest tobacco flavor in the Japanese range and the heaviest we stock in that direction. Nothing in the other four editions goes further on pure tobacco intensity.

What’s the difference between Rich Regular and Bold Regular?

Both are strong. Rich Regular is deeper and more roasted, and it holds that density to the end of the session. Bold Regular is full-bodied with more malt and a cleaner finish. If you want maximum depth, Rich; if you want strength without the heaviness lingering, Bold.

Is it too strong for someone new to TEREA?

Probably, unless you’re a full-flavor cigarette smoker. New users usually start with Balanced Regular or Smooth Regular and move up. Coming straight from strong cigarettes, though, Rich Regular is often the only stick that feels like enough.

Does it contain menthol or any sweetener?

Neither. Everything in the Regular line is pure tobacco, and Rich Regular has no added sweetness of any kind.
