ILUMA i is the current generation of IQOS devices, and it’s built on the same Smartcore induction heating as the ILUMA range before it. The tobacco experience is unchanged. What the i generation adds is control over the session: pausing it, extending it, and choosing how the battery behaves.
Three models, one heating system, and one thing worth knowing before you read further. The features aren’t identical across all three, despite the shared name.
We stock every model and every colour, all original Philip Morris product, with delivery within 1 hour in Abu Dhabi and same-day across the UAE.
The three models, and what each one actually has
ILUMA i One is the all-in-one. A single unit, 2700 mAh, 20 sticks per charge, about 90 minutes to refill. It has autostart, autostop and FlexPuff. It does not have a touch screen, Pause Mode, FlexBattery or consecutive uses, because as a single unit there’s no pocket charger to refill a holder between sticks. Five colours, and the cheapest way into this generation.
ILUMA i is the two-piece system where the full feature set lives. Touch screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, FlexBattery, autostart, up to three consecutive uses. Plastic body, five colours, and the sensible middle choice.
ILUMA i Prime has that same feature set in premium materials, with a replaceable leather-effect wrap and a sliding door. Four finishes. Our ILUMA i Prime review covers it in detail.
The honest summary: i One is a simpler device that borrowed two features from the generation, while i and i Prime are the same device in different clothes.

The four features explained
Touch screen. On the two-piece models, the holder carries a small display showing preheating progress, time left in the session, and how many uses remain before charging. That last number is the useful one, since older devices left you to find out the hard way.
Pause Mode. Stop a session and resume within 8 minutes, or the holder switches off and the session ends. It works only in Performance Mode and only during the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs. Using it also costs you a consecutive session: with pause active you get two rather than three.
FlexPuff. The device reads your puff pattern over the first three minutes or eight puffs and may extend the session by up to four extra puffs, taking a stick from 14 to as many as 18. It activates on individual usage rather than for everyone, and it won’t run on a paused session. Pause and FlexPuff are effectively an either-or within one stick.
FlexBattery. Set through the IQOS app. Performance Mode is the default and gives three consecutive sessions without pause, or two with. Eco Mode limits you to one session at a time and extends the holder’s battery lifespan by up to a year. Pause Mode requires Performance Mode, so choosing Eco disables it.
Those interactions matter more than the feature list suggests, and most stores list all four as though they operate independently. They don’t.
ILUMA i or the older ILUMA
The question worth answering honestly, because the price difference is real.
Both generations use the same Smartcore induction system and the same TEREA sticks, so the taste, the session length and the heating are identical. Nothing about the tobacco experience improves by moving to ILUMA i.
What you gain is session control: the screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, FlexBattery, and a third consecutive use instead of two on the two-piece models. What you pay is a meaningful premium.
If you’re interrupted mid-session often, or you take slow draws and regularly find a stick ending before you’re done, the newer generation earns its price. If neither applies, the older ILUMA One, ILUMA Standard and ILUMA Prime heat exactly the same tobacco for less. Our ILUMA vs ILUMA i comparison sets both sides out in full.
If official hardware is the sticking point on price entirely, the Lambda range heats TEREA using the same induction principle at a lower entry cost, assessed in Lambda vs IQOS ILUMA and the Lambda i8 review.
What ILUMA i can and cannot use
ILUMA i devices work with TEREA sticks and nothing else. HEETS have no metal element inside, so an induction coil has nothing to heat, and inserting one achieves nothing.
The reverse holds too. TEREA won’t work in an IQOS 3 Duo, Originals Duo, Originals One or lil Solid, and forcing one into a blade device risks damaging both. We still stock the IQOS Originals range and cleaning accessories for HEETS users.
HEETS in ILUMA and TEREA in IQOS 3 Duo covers both directions, and the device compatibility guide lists every model.
Nothing to clean, in any of them
Every IQOS device before the ILUMA generation used a ceramic blade that pushed into the tobacco stick. It collected residue, needed regular cleaning with sticks and cotton buds, and could snap if you twisted a stick while removing it.
ILUMA i has no blade. Smartcore induction creates a magnetic field that heats a metal element sealed inside each TEREA stick, so heat comes from within the tobacco and nothing inside the device ever touches it. No residue collects, nothing in the heating chamber can break, and flavour stays even from first puff to last because heat spreads outward from the centre rather than from one hot surface.
How TEREA sticks work explains the mechanism in full.
Getting started
Charge the device fully before first use, then insert a TEREA stick to the line on the filter without twisting. Heating starts by itself on every model in this generation. A session runs up to 14 puffs or roughly six minutes, plus any FlexPuff extension.
You’ll need sticks alongside the device. Three flavors cover most first-time buyers: Amber if you smoke full-flavor cigarettes, Yellow if you smoke lights, Turquoise if you smoke menthol.
Which edition you buy affects the price considerably. Most of our customers choose the Kazakhstan range, on cost and for its five Pearl capsule flavors. Armenia is cheaper with a shorter lineup, Japan and Indonesia carry exclusives nobody else has, and the official UAE edition comes in Arabic and English packaging. The reason for the gap is in why imported TEREA costs less, and every flavor is on the TEREA flavors page.
Full setup instructions are in our first-time ILUMA guide.
Looking after an ILUMA i device in the UAE
The operating range is 0 to 40°C, which a parked car in an Abu Dhabi summer passes comfortably. Heat also shortens lithium battery life in general, so keep devices out of direct sun and off dashboards.
Beyond that, use the supplied cable and adapter, avoid using the device while it’s charging, and that’s the whole routine. There’s nothing to clean and no consumable parts. If battery lifespan matters more to you than back-to-back sessions, Eco Mode in the IQOS app is the setting that extends it.

Frequently asked questions
Which ILUMA i device should I buy?
ILUMA i One if you want a single object and the lowest price, accepting that it has no screen or Pause Mode. ILUMA i if you want the full feature set, which suits most buyers. ILUMA i Prime if the materials and the replaceable wrap matter to you.
Does ILUMA i One have a touch screen and Pause Mode?
No. Those belong to the two-piece ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime. ILUMA i One has autostart, autostop and FlexPuff only.
Is ILUMA i Prime better than ILUMA i?
Not in features or performance. They’re identical on both counts. Prime is built in premium materials with a replaceable wrap and a sliding door.
Does ILUMA i taste different from the older ILUMA?
No. Both generations use the same Smartcore induction system and the same TEREA sticks. The improvements are in session control, not in heating.
What is FlexPuff?
The device reads your puff pattern over the first three minutes or eight puffs and may add up to four extra puffs, taking a session from 14 to as many as 18. It depends on how you draw, so it doesn’t trigger for everyone.
Can I use Pause Mode and FlexPuff together?
Not in the same session. FlexPuff doesn’t operate on a session you’ve paused, so within one stick it’s one or the other.
Do ILUMA i devices need cleaning?
No. There’s no blade, so no tobacco residue collects inside. This is the biggest practical change from pre-ILUMA models.
Can ILUMA i use HEETS?
No. HEETS contain no metal heating element, so induction has nothing to heat. ILUMA i works with TEREA sticks only.
Are ILUMA and ILUMA i parts interchangeable?
For the Prime line, yes. An ILUMA i Prime holder charges in an ILUMA Prime pocket charger and the other way round.
