Auburn is the clove stick to start with. Philip Morris describes it as tobacco with Indonesian cloves enriched by apricot and vanilla aromas, and that fruit-and-vanilla layer is exactly what makes it the gentlest of the seven clove Editions. The spice is present in every draw, but it’s wrapped in something soft rather than served neat.

If you’ve never tried clove tobacco, this is the pack to buy before any of the others.

At a glance: Indonesian clove Edition u00b7 apricot and vanilla over clove and tobacco u00b7 no menthol u00b7 the gentlest of the seven u00b7 0.5mg nicotine u00b7 up to 14 puffs u00b7 works in any ILUMA or compatible Lambda induction device.

What clove tobacco actually is

Indonesia has smoked tobacco blended with cloves for more than a century. The local name is kretek, and the word itself is onomatopoeia: it imitates the crackling sound cloves make as they burn. Around 90% of Indonesian smokers smoke kretek rather than plain tobacco, which is why Philip Morris, owner of the Indonesian kretek maker Sampoerna since 2005, built a clove range into TEREA for that market and no other.

Here’s the detail that makes the heated version genuinely different: nothing burns in a TEREA stick, so there is no crackle. You get the kretek flavor without the sound the word was named after. What you do get is the sensation, because cloves contain eugenol, a compound with a mild numbing effect on the tongue and lips. That gentle numbness is normal and it’s the signature most people remember from their first clove stick.

Clove is officially one of the three TEREA flavor categories in Indonesia, alongside classic tobacco and menthol. It isn’t a variant of something else; it’s a category of its own, and no other market’s TEREA range includes it.

What does TEREA Auburn Edition taste like?

The hierarchy in Auburn runs clove and tobacco together at the front, apricot and vanilla behind them, and warm spice threaded through the whole thing. What separates it from the rest of the clove line is balance: neither the spice nor the fruit wins.

The aroma is where clove sticks announce themselves. Auburn’s is intense but rounded, warm and slightly sweet rather than sharp or chemical, and it fills a room faster than any tobacco or menthol stick in the TEREA range. That’s part of the appeal for people who like it and worth knowing if you use TEREA around others, something we cover across flavors in our guide to whether TEREA sticks smell.

Across a session the arc is gentle. The opening draws lead with vanilla and warmth, the clove sitting just underneath. Through the middle the spice comes properly forward and the apricot turns from a top note into a background sweetness. The final third is the warmest and driest part, where the clove is most obvious and the numbing sensation is strongest. It finishes long and spiced, with a warmth that stays on the palate after the stick is done, and no bitterness. Fourteen puffs, and the whole thing reads as comfortable rather than intense.

How strong is TEREA Auburn Edition?

Auburn isn’t rated on one scale, because clove, sweetness and tobacco don’t move together.

Clove intensity: Moderate. Present in every draw but never sharp.
Sweetness: Light to moderate, from apricot and vanilla rather than added sugar.
Tobacco presence: Background. It’s there to carry the spice, not to compete with it.
Numbing sensation: Mild, from the eugenol in the cloves, strongest in the final third.
Overall character: The softest of the seven clove Editions, built to be approachable rather than intense.

If you’ve tried a clove cigarette before and found it overwhelming, Auburn is where TEREA’s clove range starts, not where it peaks.

Who should try TEREA Auburn Edition?

It suits anyone curious about clove tobacco who hasn’t tried it before, and anyone who wants Golden Edition’s tradition or Scarlet’s spice without the intensity that comes with either. The fruit and vanilla give it enough softness that it doesn’t read as a specialist flavor, even though clove itself is unfamiliar to most switchers.

Look elsewhere in the range if: you want clove with real heat behind it (Scarlet), you want clove with cooling rather than warmth (Berrine or Minago), or you’d rather skip clove entirely and stay with plain tobacco (Amber or Sienna).

Where Auburn sits among the seven clove Editions

Edition Group Fruit Character
Auburn Warm Apricot, vanilla Softest of the seven
Golden Warm Fermented plum Most traditional
Emerald Warm Fermented green fruit Freshest of the warm group
Scarlet Warm Red fruit, cinnamon Spiciest, boldest
Berrine Cool Fruit, floral Clove with cooling menthol
Mulint Cool Berry Clove with cooling and berry
Minago Cool Green fruit, mint Coldest of the seven

The Indonesian clove range splits cleanly into warm and cool.

Auburn belongs to the warm group with Golden Edition, which swaps apricot and vanilla for fermented plum and is the most traditional of the seven; Emerald Edition, built on fermented green fruit and fresher overall; and Scarlet Edition, the spiciest, with red fruit and cinnamon. Among these four, Auburn is the softest and Scarlet the boldest.

The cool group adds menthol to the clove: Berrine with fruit and floral notes, Mulint with berry, and Minago with green fruit and mint at the coldest end. All seven are laid out together on our TEREA Indonesia flavors page.

Nothing in the UAE, Kazakhstan, Japan or Armenia ranges compares to any of them. Clove exists in the Indonesian edition alone, which is also one of the cheaper editions we stock for reasons explained in why imported TEREA costs less.

If this is your first clove stick

Three things worth knowing before you open the pack.

The numbness is meant to happen. Eugenol produces a light tingling on the lips and tongue, strongest in the second half of the stick. It fades within minutes of finishing and isn’t a sign that anything is wrong with the stick or the device.

Give it a full pack before deciding. Clove is a flavor people tend to either take to immediately or need two or three sticks to appreciate, and first impressions on this one are unreliable. That’s the reason we suggest a pack rather than a carton on your first order.

Don’t taste it after something strong. Clove sits in the middle of the intensity range, so following a Rich Regular or a Black Menthol will flatten it. Auburn is at its best as a first stick of the day or after a break.

In the pack

20 sticks per pack, 200 per carton across 10 packs, with the carton priced lower per stick. Auburn arrives as original Indonesian-market stock, factory-sealed, printed in Indonesian with Indonesian health warnings, and the Edition name in Latin script on the front.

Heating and handling

Slide the stick printed-end up into the holder without twisting; heating starts on its own with current ILUMA models, while older ones need the button held until the first vibration and a second vibration to signal ready. Expect up to 14 puffs across roughly 6 minutes at 0.5mg nicotine, and drop the spent stick into general waste. The stick comes out whole because nothing has burned, which is the whole point of the Smartcore system explained in how TEREA sticks work.

Clove sticks leave more residual aroma in a holder than any other TEREA flavor. It doesn’t affect the device, but if you’re switching to a light tobacco or a mint straight afterwards, let the holder sit for a few minutes or the clove will carry into the next stick.

Any induction device heats it: IQOS ILUMA One, Standard and Prime, all of the ILUMA i series, and Lambda i8, i9 and i10. Blade devices such as the IQOS 3 Duo cannot heat TEREA at all, and the full model-by-model list is in our device compatibility guide.

Storing it

Keep packs sealed until you’re ready to use them, somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. Clove sticks are more sensitive to heat than plain tobacco, and the apricot and vanilla top notes fade before the clove itself does, so a pack left in a hot car will taste flatter and less sweet than a fresh one. Once opened, use it within a few days for the aroma to stay at its fullest.

Frequently asked questions

Does Auburn actually contain cloves?

Yes. Philip Morris blends real Indonesian cloves with the tobacco, following the kretek tradition. It isn’t a clove flavouring added to a plain tobacco stick.

What does the tingling on my lips mean?

That’s eugenol, the natural compound in cloves that produces a mild numbing effect. It’s the defining sensation of clove tobacco and it passes shortly after you finish.

Which clove Edition is the strongest?

Scarlet, with its cinnamon and red fruit. Auburn is at the other end of the warm group, which is why it’s the usual starting point.

Is Auburn sweet?

Lightly. The apricot and vanilla give it sweetness in the aroma more than the taste, and the clove spice keeps it from tipping into dessert territory.

Does Auburn Edition smell strong?

Yes, more than a plain tobacco or menthol TEREA stick. All clove Editions carry aroma further than the rest of the range, and Auburn is warm and slightly sweet rather than sharp, but it will still be noticeable in a closed room. Our guide to whether TEREA sticks smell covers how the different flavor families compare.

Can I get Auburn in a different edition?

No. The clove Editions exist only in the Indonesian range, so this and its six siblings have no equivalent anywhere else in the TEREA world.
