Golden is the clove Edition that tastes closest to traditional Indonesian kretek. Philip Morris blends smooth tobacco with Indonesian cloves and enriches it with the aroma of fermented plum, and the result is the warmest and most classic of the seven clove sticks. Where Auburn softens the spice with apricot and vanilla and Scarlet sharpens it with cinnamon, Golden simply lets the clove sit where it belongs, with a dark fruit depth behind it.

About the flavor

The hierarchy is clove first, smooth tobacco second, fermented plum third, with a warmth running through all of it. There’s no menthol and no bright fruit competing for attention. That restraint is what makes it read as traditional rather than flavored.

The aroma is deep rather than loud. Clove leads, as it does across this family, but the plum note gives it a darker, almost wine-like edge that sets it apart from the fresher Emerald or the sweeter Auburn. Across a session Golden is the steadiest of the clove sticks. The opening draws are smooth and tobacco-forward with the clove arriving underneath. The middle is where the plum shows itself, adding a dark sweetness that keeps the spice from turning one-note. The final third is the warmest and driest, with the eugenol numbing at its strongest, closing on a long spiced finish rather than a sweet one. Fourteen puffs, and unlike the fruit-led Editions the character holds fairly constant, which is exactly why regular clove smokers gravitate to it.

What “fermented plum” actually means

The phrase appears on every listing of this product and almost nobody explains it.

Fermentation is a normal part of how tobacco is prepared, developing deeper and darker aromatic compounds than raw leaf carries. The same principle applies to the fruit note here: fermented plum is not the taste of fresh plum, which would be bright and tart, but the darker, rounder, slightly winey version of it. Think dried fruit rather than fresh, or the aroma of stewed fruit rather than a plum straight from the tree.

That’s why Golden reads as mature rather than fruity. The plum adds depth underneath the clove instead of sweetness on top of it, and it’s the reason this Edition pairs well with coffee where the sweeter clove sticks can clash.

Golden against the other six

The Indonesian clove range splits into warm and cool, and Golden anchors the warm side.

Auburn is the gentle introduction, softened with apricot and vanilla. Emerald is the fresher option, built on fermented green fruit. Scarlet is the boldest, with red fruit and cinnamon pushing the spice up. Golden sits between Auburn and Scarlet in intensity and above all of them in traditionalism.

The cool side adds menthol to the clove: Berrine with floral and fruit aromas, Mulint with berry, and Minago at the coldest end. If you like Golden but want cooling with it, Mulint is the closest crossover.

Who Golden is for

Anyone who already knows kretek, from Indonesia or from clove cigarettes elsewhere, because this is the closest heated version of that experience. Anyone who tried Auburn, liked the direction, and wants the spice less padded. And anyone who prefers full tobacco flavors like Amber or Sienna and is curious about clove without wanting fruit or menthol layered over it.

If you’ve never had clove at all, Auburn is still the easier first pack. Golden rewards a palate that already knows what it’s tasting.

Using it well

Slide the stick in printed-end up without twisting. Current ILUMA models heat automatically; older ones need the button held until the first vibration, with a second vibration to signal ready. Expect up to 14 puffs across roughly 6 minutes at 0.5mg nicotine, and the spent stick comes out whole for general waste because nothing has burned. Golden is the clove Edition that benefits most from a clean palate. Its depth sits in the mid-range rather than shouting, so following it straight after a menthol or a strong Regular will bury the plum note entirely. First stick of the day, or with black coffee, is where it makes the most sense.

As with every clove stick, expect more residual aroma in the holder than tobacco or menthol leaves behind. It’s harmless, but give the device a few minutes before switching to something light.

Frequently asked questions

Is Golden the strongest clove Edition?

No, Scarlet is, with its cinnamon and red fruit. Golden is the most traditional rather than the most intense, and it sits in the middle of the warm group.

Does fermented plum make it sweet?

Only lightly. Fermented plum reads dark and rounded rather than sugary, closer to dried fruit than fresh, so it adds depth rather than sweetness.

Golden or Auburn for a first clove stick?

Auburn. Its apricot and vanilla soften the spice, which makes the first experience easier. Golden is the better second step once you know you like clove.

Why do my lips feel slightly numb?

Cloves contain eugenol, which produces a mild numbing on the lips and tongue. It’s the defining sensation of clove tobacco and fades soon after the stick is finished.

Is Golden available in any other edition?
