Berrine is where the Indonesian clove range turns cold. Philip Morris describes it as fine tobacco with Indonesian cloves and fresh cooling menthol, enriched with fruit and floral aromas, and that combination, clove plus menthol plus something sweet, doesn’t exist anywhere outside this range.
At a glance: Indonesian clove Edition · cooling menthol with fruit and floral notes over clove and tobacco · the entry point to the cool group · 0.5mg nicotine · up to 14 puffs · works in any ILUMA or compatible Lambda induction device.
Indonesia has blended tobacco with cloves for more than a century, under the local name kretek, an onomatopoeia for the crackling sound cloves make as they burn. Around 90% of Indonesian smokers smoke kretek rather than plain tobacco, which is why Philip Morris, which has owned the Indonesian kretek maker Sampoerna since 2005, built a full clove category into TEREA for that market and no other.
Nothing burns in a TEREA stick, so there’s no crackle, but the flavor comes through, and so does the sensation cloves are known for. Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with a mild numbing effect on the lips and tongue. That gentle numbness is normal, not a fault, and it’s the detail most people remember from their first clove stick.
Clove sits alongside classic tobacco and menthol as one of three official TEREA flavor categories in Indonesia. It’s a category in its own right, not a variant of something else, and Berrine is one of only two ways TEREA combines it with real cooling.
The hierarchy runs clove and cooling menthol together at the front, with fruit and floral notes woven through rather than sitting on top, and a mellow tobacco base holding it together underneath. Nothing here is sharp. The menthol is fresh rather than icy, and the fruit reads as garden fruit, more orchard than berry, rounded off by a light floral note that keeps it from tasting purely medicinal.
The aroma carries further than a plain tobacco or menthol stick, as every clove Edition does, but the cooling lifts it rather than making it heavier, so it clears a room faster than the warm clove Editions like Auburn or Golden.
Across a session, the opening draws lead with menthol and clove together, cold and spiced at once. Through the middle the fruit and floral notes come forward as the initial cooling settles into something steadier. The final third is where the clove’s numbing sensation is most noticeable, riding on top of a cooling base that hasn’t faded. It finishes clean and cold rather than warm, with a light fruit note lingering after the menthol has gone. Fourteen puffs, and the balance between cold and spice holds from the first to the last.
Four things are happening at once here, and they don’t all point the same direction.
Menthol intensity: Moderate. Fresh and consistent rather than maximum cold.
Clove intensity: Moderate, most obvious in the final third.
Fruit and floral: Light, a background note rather than the main event.
Tobacco presence: Mellow, deliberately kept out of the way.
Overall character: Cooling-forward with clove riding alongside it, the gentlest of the three cool-group clove Editions.
It suits people who like the idea of clove but actually reach for menthol day to day, and anyone who finds Turquoise or Green satisfying but wants more going on underneath the cooling. The fruit and floral notes are subtle enough that this doesn’t read as a fruit stick, so it also works for someone who wants cooling without sweetness taking over.
Look elsewhere in the range if: you want clove without any cooling at all (Auburn or Golden), you want the coldest clove stick TEREA makes (Minago), you want berry rather than orchard fruit alongside the cooling (Mulint), or you’d rather have menthol with no clove at all (Turquoise or Green).
| Edition | Group | Fruit | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berrine | Cool | Garden fruit, floral | Gentlest of the cool group |
| Mulint | Cool | Berry | Cooling with berry |
| Minago | Cool | Green fruit, mint | Coldest of the seven |
| Auburn | Warm | Apricot, vanilla | Softest of the warm group |
| Golden | Warm | Fermented plum | Most traditional |
| Emerald | Warm | Fermented green fruit | Freshest of the warm group |
| Scarlet | Warm | Red fruit, cinnamon | Spiciest, boldest |
The Indonesian clove range splits into warm, where the tobacco carries the spice, and cool, where menthol does. Berrine sits at the mild end of the cool group; Mulint takes it toward berry, and Minago pushes cooling to its coldest. All seven sit together on our TEREA Indonesia flavors page.
Nothing in the UAE, Kazakhstan, Japan or Armenia ranges compares to any of them. Clove exists in the Indonesian edition alone, one of the cheaper editions we stock for reasons explained in why imported TEREA costs less.
Three things worth knowing before you open the pack.
The numbing sensation is meant to happen. Eugenol produces a light tingling on the lips and tongue, strongest in the final third, and it fades within minutes of finishing.
Berrine is a reasonable clove starting point specifically because the menthol is familiar territory even if the clove isn’t. If you already like Turquoise or Green, the cooling here will feel less foreign than it would on a warm clove Edition like Scarlet.
Give it a full pack before deciding. First impressions on clove sticks are unreliable, and it’s why we suggest a pack rather than a carton on a first order.
Yes, though less than the warm clove Editions. The menthol lifts the aroma out of a room faster than Auburn or Golden’s warmer, heavier clove scent does, but it’s still more noticeable than a plain tobacco or straight menthol stick. Our guide to whether TEREA sticks smell covers how the flavor families compare.
20 sticks per pack, 200 per carton across 10 packs, with the carton priced lower per stick. Berrine arrives as original Indonesian-market stock, factory-sealed, printed in Indonesian with Indonesian health warnings, and the Edition name in Latin script on the front.
Keep packs sealed until you’re ready to use them, somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. Heat affects the fruit and floral top notes here before it affects the clove or the menthol, so a pack left in a hot car will taste flatter and less bright than a fresh one. Once opened, use it within a few days for the flavor to stay at its best.
Slide the stick printed-end up into the holder without twisting; heating starts on its own with current ILUMA models, while older ones need the button held until the first vibration and a second vibration to signal ready. Expect up to 14 puffs across roughly 6 minutes at 0.5mg nicotine, and drop the spent stick into general waste. The stick comes out whole because nothing has burned, part of the Smartcore system explained in how TEREA sticks work.
Clove sticks leave more residual aroma in a holder than plain tobacco does. If you’re switching to a light tobacco or a mint straight afterwards, give the holder a few minutes or the clove will carry into the next stick.

Yes. Philip Morris blends real Indonesian cloves with the tobacco, following the kretek tradition, and then adds cooling menthol on top. It isn’t a menthol stick with clove flavoring added.
That’s eugenol, the natural compound in cloves that produces a mild numbing effect. It’s normal, it’s the signature sensation of clove tobacco, and it passes shortly after you finish.
Different rather than stronger. Auburn is warm with no cooling at all; Berrine adds menthol and drops the sweetness. Neither is more intense, they just point in different directions.
Minago, which pairs clove with mint and green fruit at the coldest end of the cool group. Berrine sits at the milder end of that same group.
No. The clove Editions exist only in the Indonesian range, so this and its six siblings have no equivalent anywhere else in the TEREA world.
