Terea Scarlet Edition Indonesia

Scarlet is the boldest of the seven Indonesian clove Editions. Philip Morris describes it as a blend of Indonesian cloves enriched with the aroma of red fruit and cinnamon, and it’s the only stick in the range that puts a second spice next to the clove instead of softening it with fruit or cooling it with menthol. Where Auburn wraps the spice in apricot and vanilla, Scarlet doubles down on it.

Two spices, not one

Every clove Edition carries eugenol, the compound in cloves that produces a warm numbing on the lips and tongue. Scarlet adds cinnamon on top of that, and the two spices behave differently: clove numbs, cinnamon warms and dries. Together they build a heat that’s noticeably more assertive than anything else in the clove family, and the red fruit sitting underneath keeps it from turning harsh.

The blend follows the logic of Indonesian kretek, where tobacco and cloves have been combined for over a century and 90% of local smokers still prefer them. Philip Morris has produced kretek in Indonesia since acquiring Sampoerna in 2005, which is why clove exists as a full TEREA category there and in no other market’s range.

About the flavor

The hierarchy runs clove and cinnamon at the front together, red fruit second, tobacco last. There is no menthol and no cooling of any kind. Sweetness comes only from the fruit, and it’s a dark, jammy sweetness rather than a bright one, which keeps the profile firmly on the spiced side.

The aroma is the strongest in the clove range, and that’s saying something in a family already known for filling a room. It reads as warm, spiced and slightly festive, closer to mulled fruit than to a spice rack. Across a session it builds rather than fades. The opening draws lead with red fruit and a cinnamon edge, with the clove still gathering. Through the middle both spices arrive properly and the fruit drops back into support. The final third is the most intense part of any stick in the Indonesian range: dry, warm, heavily spiced, with the numbing sensation at its peak. It finishes long and warm, and the spice lingers on the palate well after the fourteenth puff. Reviewers who find it too much usually say so about that last third specifically.

Where Scarlet sits in the clove range

The seven Editions split into warm and cool. Scarlet belongs to the warm group, and within it the order runs roughly: Auburn softest, Emerald fresher with fermented green fruit, Golden the most traditional with fermented plum, and Scarlet the boldest.

The cool group adds menthol: Berrine floral, Mulint berry, Minago coldest. If Scarlet’s heat appeals but you want it broken up by cooling, Mulint is the closest cool equivalent in intensity. If you’re arriving from a strong tobacco stick rather than from clove, the nearest thing you already know is Teak, the woody peppered flavor in the UAE and Kazakhstan ranges. Scarlet arrives as original Indonesian-market stock, factory-sealed, printed in Indonesian with Indonesian health warnings and the Edition name in Latin script. Getting it right

Insert the stick printed-end up without twisting. Current ILUMA models heat automatically; older ones need the button held until the first vibration, with a second vibration signalling ready. Two things specific to this one. Pace yourself through the last third, because that’s where the spice concentrates and rushing it is what makes people call Scarlet harsh. And treat it as a standalone rather than a rotation stick: its aroma is strong enough that anything light following it, a mint or a smooth tobacco, will barely register. Give the holder a break before switching.

Frequently asked questions

Is Scarlet the strongest clove Edition?

Yes, in terms of spice intensity. The cinnamon alongside the clove makes it the most assertive of the seven, and the last third of the stick is the most intense stretch in the Indonesian range.

Does it have menthol?

None at all. Scarlet is a warm clove Edition. For clove with cooling, Berrine, Mulint or Minago are the three cool options.

Should I try this first if I’ve never had clove?

We’d point you to Auburn instead. Scarlet’s spice level makes a poor first impression on people who don’t already know whether they like clove, and it’s a much better second or third pack than a first one.

Why do my lips feel numb?

That’s eugenol from the cloves, and it’s normal. Scarlet produces the effect more strongly than the other Editions because of its higher spice load, and it fades within minutes of finishing.

Is the red fruit sweet?

Lightly, and it’s a dark, jammy sweetness rather than a candy one. The cinnamon and clove keep it well away from dessert territory.
